Pakistani Expatriates Shine Abroad at Tech Innovator 2012 Awards
The Tech Innovator 2012 awards were held in Las Vegas at the Xchange e-conference where the new winners were recognized. Amongst the winners, three had a Pakistani connection. The awards were announced by one of the world’s largest technology media companies, UBM Group.
The co-founder of AST Computer, Karachite Safi Qureshey, who is now a Pakistani-American entrepreneur, had been involved with many start-up technology companies. He was amongst Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s transition team and is also a former member of President Clinton’s Export Council.
Atiq Raza is currently working as the Chairman of CALIENT Technologies. He is originally from Lahore and before pursuing further studies in the UK, he graduated in Physics from the University of the Punjab. He has made a successful career for himself in America. He has been in the technology business for the past 32 years and has served as a board member for several successful start-ups.
Asad Jamal is the founder and managing partner of ePlanet Capital, formerly called ePlanet Ventures. He started the company back in 1999 and since then has moved in leaps and bounds. He was named amongst the top 20 venture capitalists in Forbes Magazine’s list for the three consecutive years in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Although it shows on the one hand, the “brain-drain” Pakistan is suffering from, but on the other hand it shows that the US has really proven itself to be the “land of opportunities” for these very technologically talented Pakistanis. It also amounts to the fact that unlike as shown in the media, Pakistan does offer positive output in human resources. Pakistani expatriates are strong and contributive in the world’s economy and present shining image of Pakistan abroad.
This also highlights the lack of opportunities for technology start-ups that Pakistan currently has. Although many measures are being taken with such initiatives as Plan9 Incubator, but the government has to really perform much better in terms of providing creative minds with the financial support that they need. Proper focus should be given through promotion in the media as well. It will give them a chance to both financially secure their start-ups and also to promote their brands and services.
