Social media marketing companies will let you believe that having a higher number of Twitter followers counts. But the former CEO and co-founder of Twitter, Evan Williams, will let you know that there must be a better way to measure social media success and influence. Mainly because there are so many bogus and fake Twitter accounts and followers that the real reach in social media cannot be measured merely on this one count.
Even Facebook is now making it their policy to remove fake ‘Likes’ as people try to put up their posts and have them Liked by fake accounts. One way Twitter might help measure real social media success through its platform is to highlight active followers on Twitters from those who just simply follow and forget. Active followers would be the ones really clicking on the links that you tweet, commenting on the tweets that you express, and also retweeting your tweets if they so think.
It is better to have this new feature on Twitter added, just as Facebook let users know how many are “talking about” a Page on Facebook. However, Evan Williams has even a better idea than this. He wants to see the real measure of success on Twitter as how many times a tweet has been retweeted or viewed. Even services like Klout and Crowdbooster do not measure the real social media influence as they are also end up calculating fake Likes and followers.
What this all means is that there is still a long way to make a meaningful social media metrics to measure social media influence. But it is one likely to be at the corner as social media is expanding in innovative ways around the world every day. It should not be like tabloid junk where entertainers are more of celebrity than professionals, just because they are covered more in the news. A true merit and metrics would be way past this superficiality.
