Cricket Companion – Tricast Media’s venture in Nokia OVI
Local Blog-sphere is abuzz with Launch of First application by a Pakistani Firm Pakistani Office of Tricast Media for OVI Store.
Tricast Media recently launched a Cricket Scoring App for Nokia OVI Store. This app allows you to stay connected to what’s happening in Cricketing world with score updates bowling batting graphs and other cricket facts and figures.
For the detailed review of the Application you can read through the coverage on these blogs
I Talked to People who are behind this app and talked a little about the App, Ovi Store, and the Organization itself.
Tricast Media is an 80 Plus Engineer Organization with offices in Dubai, UK and Pakistan focusing on Mobile Application Development and Web.
UPDATE: Tricast Media is essentially a UK Based Company, however the Cricket Companion was solely developed by Pakistan office
Their portfolio of product has some pretty interesting and compelling products for me the best of which would be TWUIK. The good thing about most of their products is its J2ME Base which allows them to target users of not only SmartPhones and PDAs but also to a very huge audience using the Feature Phones.
Here is a detailed discussion I had with them
Which platforms you are focusing currently and what are the reasons for it, I saw your Cricket Scoring app and it seems to be one of the first Pakistani Origin app for OVI Store, do you see an early mover advantage in going over to the OVI Store?
Tricast Media- We are currently focusing on java platform as it is supported by most of the handsets. We have also ported our applications on Blackberry.
I assume at some point in time you would have sat and decided to go for Nokia OVI, can you share the though process of why OVI?
Tricast Media- Nokia being the market leader and having 60% + market share gives us the maximum market reach. In the past we have placed our application on the likes of get jar but the response we have had from OVI is astonishing. Just to give you an example, within the first week of publishing our cricket application on OVI, OVI gave us more downloads within a week than getjar and mobango.
With huge userbase of Nokia phones what kind of target audience are we looking at for Cricket Companion or any other OVI app?
Tricast Media- We are looking at a mix of users, but mostly youth, males, with dispensable money. And I believe this is trend for most of the applications as males are more tech savvy.
How is your experience so far for Nokia OVI, does it have the suspense and closed walls of Iphone, does the architecture changes frequently like Facebook or are there too many growing pains like android.
Tricast Media- So far our experience with OVI has been good, from submitting an application to publishing it, the process is well defined and above all the support of OVI store is commendable. As for the look and feel of the portal itself,(mobile and web) which matters a lot to the end users, I have found it to be very user friendly and “suggestive”.
I Understand there would soon be other Cricket scoring apps from likes of CricInfo, what does your application have which would be superior to it?
Tricast Media- In fact there are not many competing applications and the ones that are, are mostly WAP based and are not JAVA application. WAP based application have their limitations, while a java based application is more feature rich similar to an on device portal. Cricket companion is free to download and has been optimized to use less data/ GPRS for its usage. The application does not only have a user friendly interface but also auto installs and configures itself. We take pride in the accuracy and timely score information delivery of our application. We also provide our users with quality content which is free to download. Our cricket application offers a lot more than just live cricket scores, we are constantly adding new and innovative features to our application, recently we introduced a “cricket genius” feature, which is basically a quiz that asks users to predict the result of a match, on each correct answer users are awarded points and the highest points taker in a month gets a chance to win latest gadgets.
Are there any other products in line that we should look out for?
Tricast Media – We have developed a mobile TV application regarding which we are in talks with some of the biggest TV channels around the globe. The unique selling point of this application is not only its ability to work on a 2 G network but it also has a reverse streaming capability. When I say reverse streaming, think of an on air competition in which viewers can submit their videos to the TV studios and participate. Where does Tricast Media see itself in future, you are definitely going for the mobile space, what are the opportunities which would be the preferred domains you think gaps exists which you can fill? Tricast Media – The technology trends suggest that soon the “Palm tops” will replace the lap tops as laptops did to desktops. We believe in building quality applications developed on cutting edge technology. We see mobile advertising as the next big thing and developing all our application that are capable of displaying ads without compromising the user experience.
I am really looking froward to have a glimpse of their UI Framework TWUIK being some what from the same space I know the potential such a framework has if properly executed. And all thanks to them for the answers to my questions.
