App Development Platform discussion
Hello every one, apologies for disappearing for few days, the longer weekend and recent surge of load shedding took its toll, back to business though.
When i graduated, the only way of doing software was getting projects from clients going through requirements and delivering it, if you wanted to startup a company you needed to have few good projects in bag, doing some thing of your own with a couple of guys was limited to website development for your uncles, or an inventory system (in Java or VB) for the corner shop of your Muhallah or if you were lucky enough your father would put you through to some one who wanted to “Computerize†his bigger business of Hospital or Restaurant. Concept of product development was alien to all of us.
However this has changed drastically in last few years, With platforms like iPhone, Facebook, Android and now Ovi, developing does not mean requirements gathering and client haggling, putting your idea to test does not take 12 months of long cycles and you don’t need a team of Project manager, Developer, QA, Customer support. All you need is a good idea a couple of months of hardcore development and without any sales team you can get access to hundreds of potential users through these platforms, hell you don’t even need an office for this.
We will be discussing with people who have experienced these platforms developed on them fought with the growing up pains.
So keep tuned in…

I don’t think that it has changed that much. You still need a team of quality developers, project managers and business dev guys to really deliver an excellent iphone or desktop or web product.

Obaid, no I did not mean to say that you don’t need these people, I meant at that time it was almost impossible to think that 2~3 person team could develop and sell a product, there were no ITunes Markets or Ovi Stores, reaching out to potential buyers meant serious marketing budget.
