CIO Pakistan started blog awards last year. Its is a good sign when some one takes initiative and starts some thing new. However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. And bloggers are one of the most hard people to win over, most of these are rebels in their own rights people who have started blogging to show the world their opinion so they might not always agree to others. However I believe this issue has grown out of proportion just because of non-response of people from CIO. If some one like @faisalkapadia  who is a known blogger and was not one of the person nominated for blog has issues then there was some thing not done according to merit or not clarified. I think this awards is needed and does help growing up bloggers to get some limelight. However the criteria should be crystal clear and judgment should be done based on it. I will stop at this and share what people around local blogosphere have been saying about the awards. First about the previous year awards

Jingoist take on 1st blog awards held in 2010

I feel sorry for all the bloggers to be associated with so much biased/unprofessional blog awards. They were completely biased .. Improfessional .. Generous enough to be award to their beloved friends .. Just like our government does that Jingoist Take on First blog awards

Ayesha’s take on the awards last year

It was advertised very well but wasn’t presented that well.. maybe because it was 1st time? Theres so much to get improved!

However looking at the feedback for awards held this year seems things have not improved, alot. Some rants from around the blogosphere echo sentiments again that criteria and judgment was not clear leaving a lot of people pointing fingers.

Faisal Kapadia asks about Judges and the judgment criteria

Now for the next part of the question : Would someone let us know who the judges were in this category? How did they reach the magnificent decision of awarding this blog site the best in current affairs blogging in Pakistan? The  over all judging criteria is listed on Pak blog awards website but I fail to see how the winning blog even qualifies.

Paktea house writes an open letter to CIO about criteria and questions its own nomination and win criteria

That there is no topic or event that can be termed “current affairs” which has not been covered by the PakTeaHouse blog. The same cannot be said for ZAVIEWS AKA NEWS. Even a cursory glance on the topics covered at the PakTeaHouse and ZAVIEWS AKA NEWS makes it abundantly clear that while the PakTeaHouse blog has covered everything from war on terror to memogate and from persecution of minorities to the periodic Veena Malik scandals, ZAVIEWS AKA NEWS falls short on each count

Alikhan Presents his own views and makes some valid points on criteria and plagiarism and summarizes is best

All of these people arguing and taking part in hating PBA don’t understand one fact, there was no such platform for bloggers before. No awards, no appreciation, none of it was brought forward by any of these so called “haters”. No one is putting a gun to their heads to nominate in the blog awards. PBA should grow, better and stronger. But they should answer the question regarding “ZaViews”.

Dr Awab Alvi and Faisal Kapadia discuss it in outofbounds

So awarding people of which every one has his own blog is not the easiest task of all, however I also believe if it had been clearly identified people from the other side would have defended it with same ferocity.

Business Incubation: False Hopes and Shattered Dreams…

When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.

Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

    Home & Cars Expo 2012

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.

First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended).  There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

    Another SHAM ICT Funding Project

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.

The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

    8th Layer of Networking

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.

The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Thiel Fellowship: right idea, wrong approach

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Bay Area hedge fund manager Peter Thiel started a Fellowship program in his name about a year ago trying to capitalize not on start ups, but the smart kids who may actually come up with the next billion dollar idea.

Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…
