Green & White, Next Steps

Ok Let me try this again, Last time i just posted a few lines, which probably did not make sense. Green and White need’s your opinions and active help in deciding the plan of actions.

As a Blog it is doing ok, But it is not getting to the next level. Here are the list of things I have identified (and voiced by our readers )

1. The interface suck, So I am not the best interaction designer or a designer I would need a lot of help while I iterate through versions of Next Green and white, would need very active contributions from your side in deciding what would be the next look of green white, so stay tuned will soon be sending some mockups for votins.

2. Quality and frequency of content fluctuates so few good posts and one below average, similarly for frequency one week goes as active and other is slow. Again I have following options to fix that and would need your opinions/advice on how to fix it. The root cause of problem currently is that I am the only one adding content, which means the Platform gets as good as Me (which I feel a lot of times is not enough). To fix this I would be doing following (please add to the list)

  • Get on board few Free lancers and part time writers (maybe paid depending on how much resources I can dedicate to this), preferably in different cities ( I am currently handicapped to cover events and companies in Karachi and Islamabad.
  • Make it more easy for Guests to create posts (will be moderated to avoid spam) but enabling some one to quickly share the news with the rest of community

3. Create a closed area in Greenwhite open to actual entreprenuers both new and old in a forum kind of way where people can with ease and confidentiality discuss their issues and seek guidance.

These are few of the possible steps I had in mind, but I am sure you are a reader would be the best judge of what you want. Please use the comment section for your feedback

  • Aoa Qazi,

I think quality of Green & White has gone down since last few months and radical changes are needed to bring it back to where it was. The three ideas that you mentioned all look very nice. Another thing that I find particularly annoying are the grammatical and punctuation mistakes in posts. No matter how interesting matter is, these kind of mistakes put off readers.

    Just my two cents.

  • I had written a lengthy comment, but when I clicked the ‘Submit Comment’ button I got a PHP (Facebook Connect) related error. Back button didn’t work, so I lost the text of the comment. Sad.

Anyway, Qazi bhai, the steps you’ve highlighted are appropriate, as the primary thing lacking at G&W is quality content. I used to visit this blog because I expected a good post at least once a week. That sadly is not the case.

I also agree with Ali, grammatical mistakes and typos in posts really put me off as a reader. You need to have a step in your authoring process to eliminate errors as basic as these.

I would also suggest reducing the number of widgets (and the TickBar at the moment) in the blog’s layout. They make the design look ugly and bloated. Not long ago, this same themed looked pretty tidy. If you’re thinking of changing the theme, try one of the many free wordpress themes on the Net, I’m sure one will fit your needs.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Qazi,

Glad to know you’re thinking about upgrades.

For me – the number of widgets on the site really get in the way of the content – e.g. I can’t click on “previous entries” at the bottom of the page because of tickbar. Also applies to things that get in the way of participation (e.g. captcha – spam can be dealt with easily enough manually at this point, no?)

Revenue from link ads etc may be less than revenue from people paying for quality content – an idea a few years ago was a premium area where industry experts could share articles coming form their deep experience and actually get compensated for it – and people paying for monthly access to it…. not really a forum – but a premium blog area.

Also, a personal request – please dont just use a vanially wordpress theme verbatim. It immediatelly gives off the feeling that the blog is just “average” and nothing extra-ordinary. Do think about starting with a theme and customizing it to something that’s uniquely Green & White.

    Good luck.

  • I also notice that site traffic is also coming down. Blog posts are not coming frequently or regularly.

  • I think more than aesthetics, it’s about the content. As long as content is good, we will keep getting value and we’ll keep coming back. The reputation of G&W is such that, even those that think it doesn’t have too much of good content anymore come back every now and then to check up what’s going on – so I guess the focus should only be “content” – not wp theme, widgets or any thing else.

  • Qazi

    1. Interface doesn’t matter as long as content is of quality.
    2. Getting more people on board to write content for you is a great idea. People are right when they say “ek aur ek gyara”. I don’t think you will have to pay anyone for this. For any extrovert technology enthusiast, the chance itself is lucrative enough to write for a blog that already has good following.
    3. I don’t think closed forum for entrepreneurs is going to work. People need to first have enough trust in the forum to share confidential things. I am not sure how you will create that trust.

Probably you have heard about the famous blogger Jeff Atwood. He has a solid advice on blogging that you may like to read:

    Goodluck :)

Then came Gullu Butt following the incident of Model Town Lahore, which stayed on top of charts (Pakistan play store) for quite some while. Gullu butt currently has more than 100,000 Installs

And now during this extremely politically tense situation which had the whole nation on its toes on 14th August we have another app continuing the …

Rise of facebook marketing in Pakistan

Until a few years back we used to have closed groups and forums, which gathered the like minded people and anyone targeting the online audience would tap into that forum and market his/her services. So PakGamers , PakPassion initially even PakWheels used to be driven by members talking about what they loved, people used to create marketing and sales opportunities from within those discussions (so you could get a good router cheap or a gaming PC etc).
The advent of facebook changed all that, most of the forum goers moved to the new social media. It also made a very attractive market place for some one who does not …

    Getting back

I  have been out of blogging for a long long long time, a lot of things happening on personal front (including a little startup I have ben doing my self). However during my absence I met a lot of people who had followed GreenWhite at its peak, read the articles regularly.

I had hope there would be some one else who would come ahead and cover everything going on and around us in the local tech world. There are some guys doing a great job, but for some reason I still could not find one source where I can go and read about everything, so my routine usually is to …

I am sure a lot more would follow. Previously we have seen seenreport becoming the basis of mostly all channels citizen reporting system (Like Geo Dost). This is a healthy sign and with the advent of 3G round the corner it should become a business generator for our local firms.

CCP Gives Guidelines Against Telecom Companies’ Deceptive Marketing

If only were there two things when it comes to the law, firstly the fear of breaking it and by passing the legal authority, and secondly, implementation of the law given full dedication, there would have been less competency and dishonesty in business and society. However, keeping good faith, the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has put forward “Deceptive Marketing Guidelines” which will maintain the Section 10 of the Competition Act, 2010. In order to enforce this part of the law and stop anti-competitive conduct on part of the telecom companies in advertising, the guidelines have been shared with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other concerned telecommunication sector members, in …
