When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.
Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.
First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended). There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.
The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.
The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Pakistani IT industry has been progressing rapidly over the last few years. It is heartening to see that the industry players are innovating and working in different areas to establish their expertise.
Recently, TenPearls, one of the leading IT companies of Pakistan, launched “Carumba!”, a 3D car racing game for iPhone and iPad. Carumba! has been designed and developed by TenPearls’ innovation labs. Launched as a free game, Carumba! allows users to earn coins during the race, and redeem them to unlock other cars and tracks or to get additional nitro boosts. It has also been integrated with Apple’s Game Center.
The game has received very good response from…

‘Rethinking Pakistan’ [and my expression goes LOL and I will explain why] was the theme of the conference which took place at margalla hills Islamabad on March 31st 2011 organized by TEDx, lets just summarize here what TEDx is; before we further dig into the “theme” and happenings of this conference.

ICT R&D Fund aims to provide graduating students a chance to really make their final projects counts. I have always felt that students in their final year some times product excellent products which due to lack of any infrastructure and proper guidance plus funding just go in the Universities Libraries.
Seems ICT R & D fund is giving these students a chance to take their projects to the next level by acquiring funding, if you are a final year student doing a project all you need is to get this form filled and submitted through your head of department .
Last date for submission for forms is 31st…

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Bay Area hedge fund manager Peter Thiel started a Fellowship program in his name about a year ago trying to capitalize not on start ups, but the smart kids who may actually come up with the next billion dollar idea.
Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…

Green n White’s quality is going down. Someone save this site!

The recession is blessing in disguise for the local IT industry, even though it spells disaster for most businesses. It will expose fundamental, structural weaknesses in the setup leading to major realization, and hopefully major rethink. This is needed. The few who are brave will embrace the new reality and make the required changes to become more competitive, globally. Others will simply fail. Which is fine. In times of recession only those who deserve success, get success – it becomes easy to filter the good from the bad. An ideal time for self-analysis. The economic tsunami will leave behind a set of truths on which to build the future of the IT industry. These truths will be invaluable. To sum it up – I’m optimistic

Suggestion: User posts – if this was one – should be accessible from a “Community” section/forum. The GnW main page should only display posts from authorized/official contributors to sustain quality and maintain credibility.

I can’t understand why Mahmood consider this thread as poor quality. I think it is an important topic. Will comment on this thread soon……..
12:16 pm
Jaywalker – its your site now. Why’re you letting the quality go down? Step up and take charge, fix the issues.

Haha. I didn’t know the new user-generated initiative was already underway! This should be fun! So how do I post?
Regarding this post – I didn’t say anything about it being poor. Kami has a valid concern and he has the opportunity at GnW to pose the question to the community. I’m simply suggesting the possibility of creating a Q&A forum where people can share questions or concerns with the rest of the community. The main platform could be a place for opinion-pieces… or something along those lines… simply to make the new “user-generated” GnW as reader-friendly as it can be.
In short – I’m not really saying anything!

Mahmood, just register at http://greenwhite.org/wp-register.php and go from there… login and start posting.
You have a good idea with the QA forum – but its a matter of putting it together and in this case we’ll need everyone to pitch in in all places. Would you know anyone willing to put the code together to make that happen?
2:21 am
Can’t think of anyone at the moment, but will float the idea nonetheless and if I find anyone interested, I’ll connect them with you.

Hi,
Sorry i cud nt continue to my thread as i was on long annual leaves and just got back. “Unkown” y u r talkig only abt NetSol? look at the other companies as well. I know lot of ppl have left Netsol in first half of 2009 bcos of no increments. If its nt the crises then wats that? Go and visit the job portals like rozee.pk where u wud find that SW companies are hiring less experianced resources (1-3 yrs exp) bcos:
1. They want to pay less/invest less
2. They dont have much work/projects
So i think v r suffering but really i have observed some stability in IT industry during last couple of months but you cant say it as a recovery or boost again…..
Like to know the comments of other guys on this topic.
10:45 am
Man! in this country does not matter you have money or not as employer always has upper edge. If employer dont want to pay u then he wont as we ppl dont take action on this. Dont u ppl know the case of INNOV8 in Lahore? Those poor guys who left them or fired by INNOV8 have still not received a single penie yet. Those who filed the case are waiting for court verdict due to the old and slow judicial system of Pakistan. They made lives of their employees miserable by denying their hard earned money and still they are running their business with same name at some different location (Kot Lakhpat area). According to my information INNOV8 got crores as loan and advance of some projects at the end of last year but did not pay a single penie to poor guys. So now where is the fincial factor u r talking abt? The main thing is to change the mindset of businessmen here to run their business in fair way……
8:24 am
Yes you r right Maqsood and thats the reason that most of the talent individuals tries to go abroad for bright future. SO such companies liek INOV8 should change their mind sets else these should b penalized like legal action or bycot not only from employees but also frm the companies working with them
3:07 pm
News is that again INNOV8 has started delaying salaries. They paid the salary of July 2009 at around 20th August and September salaries are still nt paid till Date. Poor employees.
11:11 am
what the hell is this?? why dont they close the company if they dont have the money to pay salaries? i think Inov8 should be banned and IT professionals should bycot this company coz they hav already disturbed many families in a country where there is no justice for the general public.
SHAME ON INOV8 MANAGEMENT!!!!!
4:52 pm
First of all shame on innov8 for such a bad things they are doing. Secondly Yes current financial crisis is effecting our IT Industry. These days companies are downsizing are employees are not getting reasonable salary increments and i am also effected by this. So truely and surely it is effecting us.
5:57 pm
Latest updates from innov8: Salaries of October are still not paid to employees. what they are doing?
