APEX – All Pakistan Entrepreneurs Exchange
To help the ever growing entrepreneurship culture in Pakistan, an initiative has been taken by Mr. Hamza Matin (CEO of EDP Services (Pvt.) Ltd) to launch the All Pakistan Entrepreneurs Exchange. This effort will help a lot of current and emerging entrepreneurs in this country. Under the umbrella of APEX, initiatives were also taken for the launch of Young Entrepreneurs Syndicate (YES) and Social Entrepreneurs Academy (SEA) which would provide platform to young entrepreneurs, students and academic institutions to interact for the development & training for setting up their businesses. We live in a country full of problems, so this means that there are a lot more opportunities here as compared to any other place. So, we need to identify problems, build a solution and get supported by organizations like APEX. According to their website
The All Pakistan Entrepreneurs’ Exchange is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization whose mandate is to support young people in business. Aimed at business owners, APEX provides its members an opportunity to learn from one another’s experiences and take advantage of peer support and mentorship as they grow their businesses.
•   APEX connects Pakistani entrepreneurs with each other both physically and via the internet. APEX facilitates connections with government, industry service providers, other businesses and the media. APEX works with private and public organizations to provide members with relevant and timely information and tools to strengthen their businesses.
•   APEX is the place where entrepreneurs feel confident they will meet like-minded individuals and can comfortably discuss the daily successes and challenges they experience in their businesses.
•   APEX provides its members with opportunities to learn not only from each other but from individuals with recognized expertise. APEX will also endeavor to share information on various external programs and services that may be of value to its members.
APEX is a pitch-free environment where members meet their peers and confidently and comfortably share their triumphs and challenges.

APEX is a great initiative that deserves support. When we think of entrepreneurialism, we often think of Internet startups, overlooking traditional industrial operations, which have much to teach and offer. We may also overlook the fact that entrepreneurialism involves being a subordinate and a team player, and that skills and experiences can help bolster one’s effectiveness in a full range of entrepreneurial roles.
In looking at successful entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, India and the U.S., a common ingredient is early access to work experiences. Successful entrepreneurs often had opportunities to work part time as teens in settings that taught them valuable lessons about production and inventory control, personal self-control, workplace efficiency, supervision and HR management.
One program area that APEX could take up is to encourage businesses from all major economic sectors to establish internship programs where secondary and post-secondary students work part time in settings where they will gain knowledge and practical experience. Participants could be selected for their future promise, but with an eye on diversity and broadening the management talent pool. Fair compensation should be provided.
Although I’m not a textile-industry expert, some of the best management training experiences I’ve had have come from short stints in textile plants, experiences that confirmed much of what I had been studying and reinforced my motivation to learn more.
Perhaps modeling the internship program on some (but not all) aspects of scouting could help. In some cases, pulling groups of interns away for half a day of classroom training and rotating them through a variety of workplaces would add to the experience.
As an outsider, I’m surprised that APEX membership requires third-party nomination. Some of the best entrepreneurs in the world have come from unlikely origins. APEX should be more open. It should also encourage leadership from within, rather than functioning in a top-down manner.
Last but not least is the issue of dues. It seems that the dues structure is too high for most of the categories, while also lacking premier sponsorship categories. $50 per year is as prohibitive to many students as the $100 per year fee is for academics.
With a greater emphasis on bootstrapping within APEX and a greater role for soft money, the organization may be able to achieve the membership traction that it deserves.
