WorldCall plans to launch EVDO-Lahore in December

WorldCall will launch EVDO in Lahore before the end of current year while service in Islamabad will be launched early next year.
Green & White recently talked to one of their general managers and he said that the company is planning to launch EVDO in Lahore in December while the service is expected to arrive in Islamabad in the first quarter of 2009. Technical issues and quality of the service is also being improved by the company.
Speaking of layoffs, he said that the company has currently no plans of downsizing though they have done some in the past which he said was “excess” workforce. Since the company’s takeover by Omantel, it is making a significant progress.
The company is also planning to cut down the tarrifs of EVDO in ‘very near future’ and is expanding its Internet, Digital TV and telephony operations in other areas of Pakistan including Azad Kashmir.

In UK, cell phone operators are now offering broadband internet of 2 Mbps or greater almost everywhere….
I am getting tired of this broadband “HallaGulla” in Pakistan! Who calls a download at 30 kbps* a milestone for broadband? When did a 1 MB data pipe become something to be proud of? Yes perhaps in 2001! But this is 2008! If I need broadband, it better should come up with a “wide enough” pipe and enough up/down-link where I can do a video chat, while also download a 500 MB file in less than hour, not days!

I wonder if this news will make the current players in the Broadband/DSL/WiMAX market to re-evalute and reshuffle their packages. linkdotNet has been promoting their services extensively in universities and colleges with all-inclusive discount packages and PTCL has been heavily pushing the triple play service on its customers…with the inclusion of Mobilink Infinity and EVDO…the game seems to be getting interesting.
