Karachi Snob: An online business directory

Karachi Snob is quite contrary to what the name suggests. It is not a social network pertaining to the Karachi snobs, but a portal which holds within it the directory of all the leading businesses of Karachi. From restaurants to museums to apparel and cabs, the portal features a short profile of all such service providers present, serving as a plausible tool for Karachi residents and visitors to track down from the directory of the finest places in Karachi, the one of their choice with ease.

The Web site has incorporated some interesting sections, such as New and Now in the city which features the recent happenings in Karachi; restaurants that deliver which provides a comprehensive directory for the user; the New 10 that features the new snob-approved businesses; the Karachi visitor’s guide, which provides concise and precise details a visitor should be acquainted with. Also, there is a “SMS service” which delivers the phone numbers of the snob approved businesses to the client. What really caught my attention was the snobs specials. This section provides special offers from leading businesses just up on mentioning “karachisnob.com”. There is also a free classified ads section, which might just help reselling items a less arduous job. A lost and found section is featured as well; however it seems like a far fetched idea keeping in mind the current situation.

The developers have undoubtedly done a good job at providing a comprehensive directory. But i guess the directory is in the process of being populated i did not see number of Nandos there, maybe i missed but that brings me to another point, Information is over whelming at this place for a user it might be easier to call 1217 to get the number of a place if he knows the name however if he does not then its a good place to hunt out restaurant to eat. Most important thing for any such site to grow at a rapid speed is allowing the users to submit places, this aspect is either in the works or have not been considered, unless you do that you will never be able to keep uptodate with restaurants and places popping up every where. They have their work cut out for them with other players like starz already there allowing users to even review places and give ranking and foodcourt allowing users to directly order for them without knowing the number. Having just a simple classified add thing and a simple listing directory missing the most basic functionality of search wont cut it. Also, if they add a small map of the businesses, it would further ease up things for some one new to Karachi. The general outlook of the Web site needs to be amended a bit especially the placement of the links and the visuals elements needs a lot of improvement.

  • I hate to be negative but someone’s gotta do it.

KarachiSnob has a big list of issues:

    1. The name. Come on!
    2. The look of the whole website. SEO anyone?
    3. Hard to find stuff unless you spend 5 minutes looking at the homepage.

    enough said.

Good effort, needs a lot of work to make it a great effort.

  • Very girly look there on the website. More like karachidame.com!!

  • This site is not for everyone, that’s for sure. The people I know who love the site are a certain class of Karachi. We love this site because of the exact reasons you do not like it. And you are right about not having all of the places listed on there. I don’t think they are lacking in that area, that is precisely what makes the site liked by its following. Every site has its own target market. If you are looking for a site with every place in Karachi listed, there are many to choose from.

  • Fahmina, so what is the target market for this site? can you define “certain class of karachi”.. i am from karachi and would like to knw which “class” am i from…

sure every site has its own target market but to me this site has NO target market.. well unless you are saying that its targeting snobs?

Some of the places in their listing are gone with winds such as Pizza next
They got to be quick in updates

  • YOU cant find us on Karachi snob, it doesnt mean we do not exist.

    Food Connection Pakistan

I happened to be in Quetta on a business trip last month with no idea of where to dine alone. Being a typical Lahoriite, a die-hard food lover, it matters to me that I try the best food of the place I visit. So this is where FCPakistan came to my rescue. I simply logged in, typed in my desired specifications and got atleast 5 suggestions.

The listing included their opening times, specific facilities like ease for physically disabled customers, credit card acceptance, smoking areas, take away facility, whether valet parking was available or not, and even directions to get there! What more could you want.

    Although that was the…

OLX Pakistan Investing heavily in advertisement

OLX is a global online retailer and auction site. They have an impressive footprint in a little less than 100 countries, each with their own specific domain (like .pk for Pakistan and .in for India).

In Pakistan they have been operating under olx.com.pk for some time with people using it to sell things online.

Recently they have started advertising heavily on Television, a medium seldom used by online businesses previously. The ads (two of which have appeared ) are witty and fun to watch.

The most important factor of these adds is that they are being advertised on media which previously none of our online businesses have used.

    Most of…

Second Pakistan Blog Awards by CIO Faces severe criticism

CIO Pakistan started blog awards last year. Its is a good sign when some one takes initiative and starts some thing new. However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. And bloggers are one of the most hard people to win over, most of these are rebels in their own rights people who have started blogging to show the world their opinion…

Do We Vote : A great statistical tool by PakReport.org

Pakreport.org a tool which was instrumental in gathering statistics during the massive flooding in Pakistan, has created another study/stats gathering tool for our electoral activities. Interestingly its called do we vote

With political scene in Pakistan heating up it provides very valuable information to party supporters and their leaders.  A quick look at it shows the all known facts that people in rural areas take their voting more seriously than all of us supposedly educated and enlightened urban population.

Pakreport.org was an initiative launched by Faisal Chohan of BrightSpyre during the floods, the effort enabled people on the ground to send sms (the most spread out communication medium in country)…

Stay for the work not the perks

This is a revelation that came to me when I recently quit my comfy corporate job for the second time. If you are below 40 and some one asks you about how is your job going and your answer is not in tune of “I like my job because I love the work”.

You need to pause and asses your career, last time I answered this question my answer was “I like the job, because the benefits are good”, and that made me think (offcourse there were other factors as well). But if you are doing a job in which to satisfy your own self you have to look at…
