The Evolution of Begging

September 23, 2008 9:30 am 8 comments

I have received variations on this SMS message a dozen times since the beginning of this month of Ramadan. It says

Apjo koi ho plz mere is num 03xxxxxxxxx per15rps send kr do main hospital main musibt man hun plz tumko alah aur rasol k waste mera yakin kro plz10rps plz.

which translates roughly to:

Whoever you are,  please send 15Rs. to this number of mine I am in the hospital in trouble please for god’s sake believe me please 10Rs. please.

SMS spam is nothing new, but this well-executed ‘campaign’ comes in a flavor exclusive to the land of green & white, and takes the cake.

  • I had received this kind of sms earlier this year, and I blogged about this absurd idea: http://www.sawantshah.com/weird-stuff/the-weirdest-text-message-i-received/

  • Thanks for the link Sawant, my guess: this was started by some professional spammer(s) – the ones that let you send X bulk messages for Y Rs, with an under-utilized setup (unlimited outgoing SMS packages and all)
I was getting these messages every other month or so, but the frequency has spiked during this month of Ramadan – something must be working for them to get this active.
The ones on your blog from May are begging for 10Rs. while this one starts off with 15Rs. and comes down to 10Rs. so they are actually tweaking and improving their pitch too.

  • Point is how do they get the whole big database of cell no.’s?

Are the cellular companies employees involved in leaking out the privacy information against some bucks?

  • What i called them on my blog “Digital Beggers”, or lets term them New Era Beggers

  • @Corona

I think there are more than one ways of obtaining such valid numbers, they can easily:
    * use bruteforce (with automated free SMS, that is trivial)
    * add intelligence to bruteforce by using BLOCKS of numbers (like IP blocks) that are being used by a particular operator
    * steal the data from the telco (your guess)
    * telco franchises have access to their databases as well.
    * banks and insurance companies *lend* their customer databases for unsolicited telemarketing

  • Hi Friends,

Recently i wrote an article ‘Google is biased’ on Propakistani.
Here is the link to my article:
    http://www.propakistani.com/2008/09/17/google-is-biased/ .

In this article i raised the issue to have a Google Happy Eid Doodle for Muslims and Pakistanis. And asked Google to show it on Google Pakistan on the Eid day.

Happily i got a reply from Google Pakistan. They appreciated the proposal.According to some close sources we have made a buzz in Silicone Valley.Google is considering the Doodle for Muslims.

A fellow blogger Dr.Awab a.k.a Teeth Maestro also wrote a similar post.
    Here is its link:
http://www.teeth.com.pk/blog/2008/09/23/google-doodle-muslims-pakistanis .He also pointed out the same issue.

But it’s not confirmed by Google that we will see the Doodle or not.So what we have to do is this that if you want to see Doodle this Eid and all coming Eid’s,write an article like mine’s urging and asking Google to make a Doodle for Eid.

If only we all bloggers of Pakistan work together can make this a reality.

So please visit my article, leave a comment and write one on your blog too.

But please don’t forget to link and ping back your article to my original article here as i deserve it:
    http://www.propakistani.com/2008/09/17/google-is-biased/

So lets get working, make this a reality and gift this to our nation on this Eid.

Please forward this email and spread the word.

    Thanks

    Regards

  • Well, I’ve been receiving at least two more types of messages that dont ask for money, but try to steal it from you.

One of the SMS says ” is celebrating there th birthday and giving away free Rs. 100 balance to you. To get your free balance, send to .

This will actually the balance transfer code and if you do what this sms says, you may end up losing some of your balance. (= mobile network operator like Warid, Mobilink, Ufone etc)

Second variation of above is even more interesting. Usually you receive a business card of some imaginary Aisha. In this business card, the number mentioned is not a phone number but an interestingly malformed code that eventually transfers some funds from your number to another number.

This is for sure stealing. I wish our people spend their intelligence in some constructive work.

  • How come such people ask for money who are the silly people send them money..

I love what Qurtaba are doing in a niche area of Urdu Language. Although their start was from Nan-Map for which they now have an iPhone App.There love for Urdu language related apps has been flourishing in recent months. Most of their apps are doing very well on app store, some impressive numbers for their popular Urdu apps are as follows.

    Food Connection Pakistan

I happened to be in Quetta on a business trip last month with no idea of where to dine alone. Being a typical Lahoriite, a die-hard food lover, it matters to me that I try the best food of the place I visit. So this is where FCPakistan came to my rescue. I simply logged in, typed in my desired specifications and got atleast 5 suggestions.

The listing included their opening times, specific facilities like ease for physically disabled customers, credit card acceptance, smoking areas, take away facility, whether valet parking was available or not, and even directions to get there! What more could you want.

    Although that was the…

OLX Pakistan Investing heavily in advertisement

OLX is a global online retailer and auction site. They have an impressive footprint in a little less than 100 countries, each with their own specific domain (like .pk for Pakistan and .in for India).

In Pakistan they have been operating under olx.com.pk for some time with people using it to sell things online.

Recently they have started advertising heavily on Television, a medium seldom used by online businesses previously. The ads (two of which have appeared ) are witty and fun to watch.

The most important factor of these adds is that they are being advertised on media which previously none of our online businesses have used.

    Most of…

Second Pakistan Blog Awards by CIO Faces severe criticism

CIO Pakistan started blog awards last year. Its is a good sign when some one takes initiative and starts some thing new. However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. And bloggers are one of the most hard people to win over, most of these are rebels in their own rights people who have started blogging to show the world their opinion…

Do We Vote : A great statistical tool by PakReport.org

Pakreport.org a tool which was instrumental in gathering statistics during the massive flooding in Pakistan, has created another study/stats gathering tool for our electoral activities. Interestingly its called do we vote

With political scene in Pakistan heating up it provides very valuable information to party supporters and their leaders.  A quick look at it shows the all known facts that people in rural areas take their voting more seriously than all of us supposedly educated and enlightened urban population.

Pakreport.org was an initiative launched by Faisal Chohan of BrightSpyre during the floods, the effort enabled people on the ground to send sms (the most spread out communication medium in country)…

Stay for the work not the perks

This is a revelation that came to me when I recently quit my comfy corporate job for the second time. If you are below 40 and some one asks you about how is your job going and your answer is not in tune of “I like my job because I love the work”.

You need to pause and asses your career, last time I answered this question my answer was “I like the job, because the benefits are good”, and that made me think (offcourse there were other factors as well). But if you are doing a job in which to satisfy your own self you have to look at…
