I just had the chance to look at JustMeans, who are offering an incredibly fresh way for companies to find good employees via an online platform. In short: their platform is nothing short of beautiful.

The beauty is that JustMeans isnt only focusing on helping with the process of hiring (i.e. helping you get more resumes, parse resumes, schedule interviews or what not ) but they’re focusing on something that is much much more valuable to me today – they’re helping companies create a better brand or impression among candidates; helping companies find the right candidates who will be a long-term fit; and most importantly helping generation-Y find more meaning in their work.

Their approach is that (1) they allow companies to build a rich information portal that describes them and whatever is unique about them and sets them apart — this really goes well beyond the "company name and profile" standard. (2) They actually allow anyone to start discussions with different people from the company… not just the HR or PR people but any of the employees who’re part of the company’s "network"… and these conversations are also available on the portal or peruse when researching that firm.

Through conversation candidates can likely discover who that company really is and what they believe in… candidates can discover well before applying to positions whether or not that company will offer intellectually stimulating work, a respectful work environment, or a vision to be happy to be a part of, a lunch-menu that feeds a demanding stomach…. whatever you choose as qualities of the "perfect job". In that way they are much more likely to discover a company that they would gel with much better.

JustMeans basically helps to filter candidates down to people who’re actually interesting in the firm on merit, so that when that firm opens job positions they are likely to find just the right talent for their firm.

I had the chance of speaking to their CEO Martin Smith and the amount of leadership and domain insight he demonstrated was remarkable. According to him, any successful platform or trading floor reduces the total transaction costs against which value is purchased, and JustMeans is helping to reduce the transaction costs of finding more meaning in your work. Read the full interview at Social Bridges.

Now, for the dozens of job boards locally trying to cash-in on a bandwagon – why cant anyone think beyond whats already (not) working and try to solve the deeper issues of the average company trying to attract good talent. Can we think beyond logos as a way of attracting those people and help us build employment brands? Pretty please?

  • Nice.

I would have more appreciated it if they would have done this much good work on some innovative new product.

    Still it’s cool :)

  • did i miss something on the site? I created an account spent good amount of “first” impression time to see what its all about and I didn’t get the killer feeling here..

    i am sure i missed something ..

  • Hi Ob,

Check out networks -> timberland. That should give you an idea about this.

Corona, what would be your criteria for something to be innovative and new?

  • ah.. interesting, but I will pass on it. As a candidate who is looking for a job I don’t have the patience nor the time to go through company profiles like this.. i think the bigger help would be just to connect with my contacts who work at xyz companies.. ie. linkedin

lets see where this idea goes..

  • Osama,

Thanks so much for talking with Martin and writing about JustMeans! In response to some of the comments, we are definitely working on usability and first impression clarity. We just launched our “dynamic” (DHTML) version of the homepage, so users can organize news, jobs, companies, etc. according to their interests. Also addressing ob’s confusion, users don’t have to search through company profiles for job listings, they can simply use the “jobs” section of the site to search listings by company, region, field and more.

I hope that clears some things up. I also want to remind you and your readers that JustMeans is a social responsibility platform for individuals that aren’t necessarily seeking a job (we offer networking, news, blogs) and we also have an expert tech team that has mastered social media build-outs for socially responsible companies.

Thanks again for learning and writing about JustMeans! Stay in touch!

    Best,

  • ?? I have no idea what coolade you’re drinking (no pun intended)… but this site gets 3 out of 5 max! There is no messaging other than “the trading floor for social responsibility”. After spending 5 minutes reading your blog, I could not figure out if I were even on the correct site or not. They might as well put “restore the judiciary” as a tag line.

Too dilute and confusing for anyone to signup organically….

  • Ali, cool comment.

Are you in the web usability business? Let me know, I might have a project or two for you – osama@greenwhite.org

Business Incubation: False Hopes and Shattered Dreams…

When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.

Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

    Home & Cars Expo 2012

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.

First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended).  There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

    Another SHAM ICT Funding Project

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.

The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

    8th Layer of Networking

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.

The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Thiel Fellowship: right idea, wrong approach

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…
