  • Hiiiii,
I am too happy kay now Wateen ka Wimax is working toooooo fantastic. I used wateen since 11 months lekin in starting wateen was very bad. I complaint again aur again but no action happened from wateen ki side say. But 2 month pehle the has been solved or ab I am too much satisfied.

  • Tariq J Qureshi (TQ)

My dear lovely next generation of Pakistan. A well wisher send me me the link today as my name was mentioned a couple of times. Azeem and Mustafa..thhanks for the nice words & confidence in me.

The praise for launching Wateen Wimax is not just due to me, but every one of my young friends at Wateen who took the first step at introducung the technology.

I see some happy and some ‘not-so-happy’ customers of Wateen writing here. Okay here are some tips. I am just coming back from Mexico and “somewhere” in Africa from a consulting appointment, and told the companies to have the right sales tools to reduce the pains for customers, so to cut the story short,

    1. Ask the service provider-(whoever it is), if they have coverage in the “exact” area you plan to use the service in?” You will avoid a lot of irks. Initially all companies will have coverages in few areas and as number of users expand, the gaps will be filled in, but you need to make sure coverage is there in your area.

    2. Next, find out how the in-door coverage is?
In your houses place your modem at a location where signal reception is good and you will be all right. It’s just like cell phone coverage, some places you have weak signal, and some places really good, so locate yourself where signal is good. Likewise it will not work in basements. It’s not suppose to!

    3. See the beauty of Wimax is that you can use ‘all’ applications that work on DSL as it is a open system. I am on video calls with my family in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, UK and they are using Wimax, DSL and whatever system so it works like a champ. Try it some times, you will forget chating on IM!

    4. Next try video conferancing, that is 2/3 people together, it is just fantastic. I am working working with companies here in USA to implement a lot of solutions that will make WiMAX platform shine for all business users. Try skype, and you will know what I mean!

So, feel free to ask me questions, and I will try to answer them for you. I owe this to our future generations while I am not there with you in Pakistan.
    Allah Hafiz

thing for all future users to askme, I was just the visionary and the architect of how, when and why. ntal along with all my dear friends in Wateendefine the way WiMAX would be used, and deployed. Bottom line you have to have coverage to have access, so irrespective what company launches it (Wateen, Linkdotnet, Augere or Witribe), to first condition for the carrier is to be upright with customers and tell them if they are offering service in which you plan on using the service. Infact as a user you should ask

Now about WiMAX and the rest of the story.
See no technology is bad or good, each technology has it’s own usage

  • Tariq J Qureshi (TQ)

Sorry people, last write up had some garbage as last paragraph….
    Please discard that…after Allah hafiz

  • Along with other cost-effective and flexible services Wateen offers Broadband internet with new revised tariffs for as low as Rs. 499 a month! Isn’t that cool now we all can enjoy more surfing at extremely reasonable rates with high speed internet up to 1 Mbps just for Rs.799. WiMax –Wireless Freedom from Wateen is spreading like wild fire now. Additionally the big blast is Wateen to Wateen calls FREE for LIFE. How can anyone of us miss that! It’s surely an experience you deserve. And hey if you still don’t have a Wateen connection. Go and get one now!! Wait wait… you can contact them on 111 365 111

  • @ Sehrish,

How much did Wateen pay you for coming up with such a cheesy advertisement… lol…Wateen marketing dept. should be congratulated for coming up with such an old idea of spammed advertisement…

Mr. TQ, Salute to you for your contribution towards advancement of technology and broadband in Pakistan.

  • Tech Turtle,
    Thanks!
I really would love to hear from people who have used both Wateen and Mobilink and the EVDO from PTCL!

My interest in EVDO from PTCL is as it was my teams products when I was VP-Commercial (P&S) at PTCL!!!!! In the last days I had recommended to increase the coverage so people don’t feel the negative effects of cell shrinkage!

    Some questions:

    1. What connection (256k/512K) to you have and what is the download and uplink speeds are you getting?
    2. Are there any outages?

    3. Since both companies have deployed NLOS, so where are the dead area’s you get in your house or office. Reflect two things (
    a) Blind spot was on what floor?
b)How many windows do you have in your room where you have the Wimax modem. (The more the widows the better chances of better signal).
    (c) How many of you talked on wifi+Wimax yet, and how was the experience? I am trying to put together a skype kind of solution on wimax, and youe experience will really be helpful.

    Best Regards…
    TQ

  • TQ, for a start if you were such a “Champ” how come Wateen is a huge failure. And Wateen’s failure is not just due to technology. Poor sales/marketing strategy, pathetic customer support, uneducated franchise staff all adds to what today is a service that at best is below average.

Infact Wateen is used worldwide as an example of what NOT to do in a WiMAX operation.

TQ, how about you go and give some of your “wonderful” advice to Wateen to help them improve.

  • @ Sehrish

You can get a Nayatel connection with a reliable support which is cost effective.
and really providing what we are advertising that service can only be avail in Islamabad
Feel free to call on support:P

    Stay Blessed:)

  • Dear Techie…You have asked a excellent question about me and Wateen! I left Wateen in Jan-07 and commercial service was not launched till I think November 07.

However…. the bible for implementation of marketing, Sales, Customer services and contact centers was left. I don’t know if it really got used.

In a nutshell I still have faith that a professional can put Wateen on the top within 90-180 days. Dont forget they still have the largest nationwide WiMAX footprint, with Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and other cities in place while Mobilink has lauched in Khi and Witribe, Augere and another surprise player has to still get going.

I am still open to returning for short term consulting assignments for any of the 4 Wimax companies as they all have potential of providing world-class service.

Remember competition creates quality. Telecom business is “People selling to People”, and people will leave for other companies if you cannot meet customer expectations. (See how people switched from PTCL landlines to cellular)!

People who worked with me in PTCL soon after I joined would tell you of limitless frustrations, The biggest challenge was “Changing the mindset” of employees!

I am writing a book called “Managing Change” due for completion in 12-18 months. PTCL was no different then any government managed services company in emerging markets around the world, and Etisalat under the circumstances is busy retailoring the 60 year old suit! I am sure in 12 months pakistan telecom market will be as vibrant as any other market.

  • The paid blogger (Sehrish) wrote:

Additionally the big blast is Wateen to Wateen calls FREE for LIFE. How can anyone of us miss that!

LOL. At present, there are close to 100 million phone subscribers in Pakistan including mobile (90+) and fixed. However, Wateen has hardly 32k customers so far. This means that there is a 0.03% probability of calling a Wateen number. In 99.7% of the numbers called, a Wateen customer will be charged. So Free Wateen-to-Wateen calls hardly matters. Go figure!

  • I have see the change in the mindset of consumers in the last 5 years or so. Ever since World Call introduced their cable connection as broadband (calling 64Kbps a broadband connection), people started to learn more and more about it. Now with the emergence of Wateen, this market again saw a rush in people and companies looking at lower broadband rates (considering getting an unlimited 512Kbps connection in 2002-03 cost around 3K per month). Competition is always healthy but competition in which one company is after another company with a cut throat price would only result in deletion of both thus leaving the consumers with nothing in hand.

I think all these companies should sit down and decide on which bottom line rates they would offer and then fight on who will provide better service. The pie is still untouched, only if they were able to see it. All they are doing is fighting in metro towns and forgetting about the suburbs and rural areas. WiMAX is a blessing for all these companies to actually tap into the customers who are residing in mandi bahauddin or tandlianwala. They should learn from GSM market, which only expanded when companies expanded they network and improved the quality of service

  • Tech Turtle…
Rest assured, that competition will reduce rates, I have seen rates tummble in unregulated markets. Remember, lower rates expand market size, will have positive impact on economy and create jobs. Here are examples…by the way I use to give similar examples when I lectured on different channels, and beleive me I know, our youth are more intelligent then last generation.

    Examples:
    1. Warid and Telenor’s entry with lower per minute mobile rate of Rs 2/- nationwide expanded the market from 4 Million users in 2005 to 75 Million users (2008). The biggest impact of telecom expansion was economic growth in non-telecom sectors. same service is used by a corporate executive to the lowest tier contributor to Pakistan’s economy —the mazdoor! We can now call the plumber and gutter cleaner on cell phone to get service. Isn’t that great for us and the worker too!

    2. Next the broadband (expecially) the wireless will open new horizons. I give credit to our future generations, they are more smarter then their parents. All that they need is opportunity. A 8 year old in my village got onto internet as he had used it at another friends house. The 3-5 year olds know what a computer is simply because the total multimedia is interlinked. I gave my 10 year old desk top to my village masjid room, with a Vfone dial up, and found that some kids were finding the rates of produce from the mandi for their fathers before they bought their ‘fassal’ to market. This was a real inspiration…

As a part of Wireless broadband, a program that was discussed with ‘some’ international company was how to put a public wall mounted computer in every village where people could use it for interconnecting with the world. The arabic ket board, is almost like Urdu key board, and we had experimented it for implementation in 2.5 Million villages in Pakistan.

So my expectation is that ‘without’ the government interferance, wireless broadband can be expanded to villages and will still be a economically feasible business proposition.

  • Dear Amir,
    You have a excellent observation!
However consider one thing. Pakistan population is 160M and a house hold size of 10, there are 16 Million house holds as potential broadband connections market. Next you need 16M computers to interconnect. Wateen, Linkdotnet, PTCL DSL are all subscribers are potential future IP-telephony customers. As networks grow, I expect that Wateen and other Wimax operators will offer voice as a standard service within the price of broadband. See example of free calls on Skype- Skype connection any where in the world. I use it today to talk to all my old Wateen and PTCL and other friends sitting on computers! and for free…!!!!. I even use video-calling, so it is already there.

I highly recommend that you talk to friends across all networks (including Wateens 32000, PTCL’s 100,000 or more) and you will see the service will pick up, and all for free!!!!

  • Muhammed Usman

I would like to thank you all for your input it is very helpful

  • Very interesting comments… TQ I agree with your vision of WiMAX in Pakistan and in general… Lets hope this means a better future for all internet users and the extra competition forces Wateen to pull up their socks…

PS: I’ve setup a small forum (www.wi-forum.com) to discuss wireless technology… Would appreciate everyone joining…

    Regards!

i think it is a good technology but if the customer require only internet so what would the company do. the customer do not require telephony . ok if you give a telephony and the customer do not require telephony at lest the customer do not want to pay the line rent of the telephone.

  • Do anyone know about PON network or FTTX?

  • Dear All witribeon
I will see when witribe will stable like wateen Because you can’t campere witribe with WATEEN Because Wateen is the bset service provider,

  • Sehl,

If Wateen had been the best provider, how come it is growing at only 3k subcribers per month despite being in 25 cities? The reality is that wateen’s service is not as good as wi-tribe’s. wi-tribe sells only when the customer is in the coverage area unlike Wateen. The market should wait for wi-tribe so that finally there is a quality broadband operator who can meet the customer’s expectation.

  • Wimaxer, WiTribe has not even launched yet how are you comparing, I am not saying Wateen is excellent, but you have to have another service to compare. and Infinity has not even crossed the boundary out of Karachi.

  • proud pakistani

wimaxer?? I have a question to u. did u use wi-tribe?? I think your answer will be no. I am not against wi-tribe but i am favor in wateen coz i m using wateen and its a wonderful service.
We should proud u ourselves having technology like wateen WiMAX, Mobilink infinity ete etc….

Main purpose for this… If we appreciate, they will invest more and more and finally result will be IT sector will earn more.

So we should proud our country………
    Pakistan Zindabad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Proud Pakistani, I am using wi-tribe during their FUTs and their service is great. I am getting very good speeds and an always on connection. We should be proud of finally having a quality provider like wi-tribe. If consumers appreciate quality, then it will attract more foreign investment. Proud of being a Pakistani also!

  • Tariq J Qureshi (TQ)

Faheem, what area are you living in?

    1. I assume PTCL will have their OFAN or DSL in your area. If your last mile cable is good, your DSL will work like a champ.
    2. Ask PTCL if they have EVDO service in your area. It was excellent, I used it for 3 months when I had it on trail.

I have been out of PTCL since 3/08, and at time of leaving plans were there to have DSL all over by 12/08.
Sorry, due to heavy turnover in PTCL most top people I knew have left, otherwise could have referred you to them. The CEO could be send a email, but he will NEVER respond (based on experience), but he will yell the hell out of his staff and you may end up getting a connection.

Regarding your problem with Wateen? Ask them point blank if they have coverage in your area. If not, return the modem. See they do have a problem and that is their channels themselves are not aware of where and where-not they have coverage. Plus yes, they have bad service. I requested service for my brothers home and office, and it was a very unpleasant experience.

Next for others LDN and whoever make sure you dont repeat Wateen’s mistake. Ask them if they have coverage in your area before you order service or pick up the modem.

Last write to PTA if you have problems with any player. PTA does ride!
    Good luck
    Regards

  • bill_the_man

hello ppl. TQ, i am really impressed with your immense knowledge and efforts put in for the IT / Telecom infrastructure development in Pakistan. I have had the chance to live in Australia for 2 years and was surprised to see that technology is still in the developing phase whereas in most of the areas Pakistan is way ahead! this is something to be proud of.

WiMAX is an amazing technology and any new technology takes some time in getting adhered to the users’ society. i am a user of Wateen WiMAX and so far it is smooth sailing. speed is really good. unfortunately Wateen had problems in the beginning when they launched WiMAX but if you put it in positive terms, it is the first organization in the world to launch WiMAX on a nationwide scale. it is the market leader and rest have followed its footsteps. no doubt competition is getting fierce with the passage of time, Wateen is working on strong positive notes to compensate for its mistakes. many big corporates such as Barclays bank, MCB, Askari Bank, Nishat Group, RBS etc. Educational institues such as LUMS, IBA etc. are on board Wateen and this clientele is getting big rapidly. it would be unfair to say that Wateen is down and out. it is coming back strongly. competition will bring down rates, ultimately facilitating the end users to a great extent. competition is the name of more opportunities. competition brings forward the urge to do better than ever before. thus, not capitalizing on this opportunity is like loosing an opportunity of a lifetime!

we should be proud that the IT / Telecom industry in Pakistan is growing like anything. lets hope and pray that this development flourishes with the passage of time and everyone benefits greatly from it. Cheers!

  • Tariq J Qureshi (TQ)

    bill_the_man.

Happy you like Wateen! Yes there are teething problems, every service does! But in the end it all works out.

Lets put it like this that between Wateen and Mobilink they have expanded Broadband market by say 70K-100K. By 12/2009, it will be 3 times (say 300K). With Witribe and Augere launch they will also expand market by another 100K. So between 4 companies 400,000 customers are expected by 12/2009. Not bad. That will be 3 times more then on PTCL DSL.

Look at it another way. The competition has forced PTCL (another of my past employers) to decrease tariff and improve service.

  • bill_the_man

in relation to Augere, i read / heard that for the time being Augere is not launching its WiMAX services in Pakistan due to some conflict with a local vendor (can’t recall the name).

  • bill_the_man

…well it was Augere (via Telecard) vs. Wi-Tribe for 3.5MHz band spectrum frequency and repotedly Wi-Tribe has emerged as the winner!

  • Wi-tribe is being supported by Wateen because they are using Wateen Fibre optic cable as back bone which has been expanded in whole country anyways wateen has launched Wi-max first so they are pioners of wi-max and i hope no no one can launch wi-max technology in 22cities at the time of its launching. Great work by wateen and let see what wi-tirbe do

  • Tariq J Qureshi (TQ)

I am hoping Witribe & Augere launch as with Wateen alone the market has gone stale, and there is no market expansion. PLUS the expected creativity has DIED.
I am also hoping that our CDMA EVDO friends also get into action (PTCL, CDMA1, WorldCall). Bottom line unless Pakistan reaches the critical mark of 1 Million broadband connections by this year end the market will not create subset applications markets. Look at cellular infrastructures, domestic software has started producing results.

Overall its not about Wateen Vs Augere Vs Witribe or LinkdotNet, it is about overall broadband expansion to help the country’s needs.

  • wi tribe is a good broadband system

  • Hi,

Competition is always a great thing in any given market for consumers and for the providers too. As the competition increses prices drops down more people will be interested in such producst ebcause of affordability.

However to be honest, I am not impressed with the packages announed by Wi-Tribe and the intial launch is only in 3 major cities and that is all.

Looking at a bigger picture, me personally, not impressed by the approach of all the operators of Wimax technology. The first thing could be they are intentionally not utilizing all the avenues and waiting for the competitors to jump in with innovation. There is so much you can do over this network, portability and connectivity on the go can be just another thing but maybe we need to wait for another few years to see this happening.

First thing I do not like about these companies (including PTCL) is lack of suggestion to people to go wireless. e.g. PTCL doesnt provide you an option to go with a WLAN compatible Modem, and these Wimax companies they give you these modems on ridiculously high prices. I personally think they should throw these modems in on affordable prices and along with them offer the devices compatible to them like netbooks, PDAs, and why not IPHONES? I mean it makes perfect business sense to me!

Another thing is why cant they launch something like a USB dongle recently introduced over the CDMA networks? I mean to me it doesn’t sound like a rocket science to develop a receiver/adaptor of that standard, it should be similar to the standard Wi-Fi adaptors.

In a nutshell I think its great to see a potential platform in pakistan but we do need some innovative executives sitting in top offices to come up with something that create a new BUZZ of IT & Communication in Pakistani market. I personally think that Pakistani market has a lot of potential which can be utilized through interesting, attractive and agreesive approach.

But the offer of SMARTER package shows 1 mbps 15GB volume for Rs 1200/- which is unjustified.

CCP Gives Guidelines Against Telecom Companies’ Deceptive Marketing

If only were there two things when it comes to the law, firstly the fear of breaking it and by passing the legal authority, and secondly, implementation of the law given full dedication, there would have been less competency and dishonesty in business and society. In order to enforce this part of the law and stop anti-competitive conduct on part of the telecom companies in advertising, the guidelines have been shared with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other concerned telecommunication sector members, in …
