When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.
Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.
First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended). There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.
The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.
The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Pakistani IT industry has been progressing rapidly over the last few years. It is heartening to see that the industry players are innovating and working in different areas to establish their expertise.
Recently, TenPearls, one of the leading IT companies of Pakistan, launched “Carumba!”, a 3D car racing game for iPhone and iPad. Carumba! has been designed and developed by TenPearls’ innovation labs. Launched as a free game, Carumba! allows users to earn coins during the race, and redeem them to unlock other cars and tracks or to get additional nitro boosts. It has also been integrated with Apple’s Game Center.
The game has received very good response from…

‘Rethinking Pakistan’ [and my expression goes LOL and I will explain why] was the theme of the conference which took place at margalla hills Islamabad on March 31st 2011 organized by TEDx, lets just summarize here what TEDx is; before we further dig into the “theme” and happenings of this conference.

ICT R&D Fund aims to provide graduating students a chance to really make their final projects counts. I have always felt that students in their final year some times product excellent products which due to lack of any infrastructure and proper guidance plus funding just go in the Universities Libraries.
Seems ICT R & D fund is giving these students a chance to take their projects to the next level by acquiring funding, if you are a final year student doing a project all you need is to get this form filled and submitted through your head of department .
Last date for submission for forms is 31st…

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Bay Area hedge fund manager Peter Thiel started a Fellowship program in his name about a year ago trying to capitalize not on start ups, but the smart kids who may actually come up with the next billion dollar idea.
Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…

hi there – i know its not the right blog to enquire but i would still try my luck. I have ben assiged a task to look up for the ways to retain the valuble churned customers. can anyone assist in discovering new ways and mechanics in this regards. to sum it up “how to retain the valuble customers” and or ” how to build desired level of cusotmer loyalty among the subscribers” and these suggestions should be in telco perspective.
4:32 pm
Zam,
Would you like fries with that?
First, your company is “assiging” a task to somebody who has no clue OR prior experience on how to do it. Then, instead of starting the research on google and asking some specific questions on a marketing forum, you want to try your luck here (aka trying to make others do your work for you), and then you make it worse by (probably) quoting right out of the email sent to you for this task. Since this is a web forum, so I will not criticize your multiple spelling mistakes, but looking at your name, I wouldn’t be surprised if you work for Zem.
Coming back to your request, even though I would not blame any customers who would want to leave your clueless telco, but one way of retaining a small portion of valuable customers would be by you not revealing who you work for.
4:53 pm
Well buddy! I deeply admire your ability to guess about someone’s organization just by someone’s name. If I use the same analytical skills, than I guess you would be working as a male nurse in some hospital for mentally disabled person (May be thats the reason why you are cynical). By the way it would not surprise me if my guess it right.
Anyways i would still look for some serious bloggers to come up with suggestions, if any.
1:28 am
ummm.. it is a typo, because i went through the same news report, in a better news paper, which reported that CMPak was to invest $800 million more after initially investing the $700 million in Pakistan..
7:58 am
Guys you really need to stop flaming each other or we’ll have to start moderation.
@Zam – that question is too complex to answer via comments. If you’re serious about finding an answer I’d suggest you should hire a consultant.
8:57 am
well Usama Dear – Dont give me cold shoulder here, hiring a consultant at my own would not be rational as well as economical for me. I have an idea why dont you start a new thread on “what does customers like to see in their fav operator” subject. i suspect it would bring more responses from bloggers. Anyways thats just a suggestion and nothing else.
2:25 am
Well about ZONG’s investment, its just coz of Chinese accent… our reporters will get used to of this, until then we should counter check such confusing figures. And this has happened twice in only 1 month….earlier on CMPak CEO commented somewhere that ZONG acquired 1.2 million subscribers in 1 month, and some one translated it as 12 million in one month…
Anywayz..
12:05 pm
Osama can i have your email address kindly. Want to provide you with some piece of news
11:36 pm
Thats funny … Aamir has pointed to a relevant item. But seriously, I dont think the source of this mistake (if it was one) was China Mobile. My guess is that it was Daily.Pk. Some online news sites don’t seem to have much quality standards.
On Zam’s comment: I get these kinds of comments all the time. Mostly these are students asking me to prepare answers to their assignment/research topic ‘asap’.
11:55 pm
Interesting conversation. By the way Zam might be a kiddy who want ready made solution but at least cynic should have shown responsible behavior by not bringing Zem in the whole thing. I wonder how easily we start blaming companies and groups for things. China mobile for the mistake and Warid for the fact that some guy chose a nick being too close to Warid Prepaid brand name.
Anyways, over all Green and White is doing a great job and Babar I respect you but i expect you to categorize a blog as sub standard just because of one mistake. May be you are perfect but rest are not!
11:58 pm
Junaid this is the news business – it is incredibly important to get these things right because news impacts the perception of people towards an issue.
One mistake can be more costly than you are considering – my take is if a blog isnt taking itself seriously about the quality of content they produce they just shouldnt
10:05 pm
If you want to retain customer, provide delightful experiences.
Think Apple, it is expensive but people still buy their products.

I really hate to be the nagger on this forum, as I was also nagging about Wateen’s WiMax..
Anyhow, A reliative of mine has worked for Zong. He did pretty good in intial sales and etc. He was temp just as all the other sales staff was.
They did not pay them salary for two months and when they wanted to confirm their job, they wanted Rs 500,000 check as a “security deposit”.
He has been aquitted without any formal documentation and they refuse to return his check…

I have heard from an AlFalah Bank employee who had to bribe people there before getting job there.
I used to hear about this type of corruption coming from Government organizations, now private sector too.
6:47 pm
Must say a very versatile thread, started with ZONG and now in the middle of discussing corruption in private sector
