People who talk about charging the users ie the readers are off the mark.
I believe the question is about the nature of monetizing your blog.

You could take the path of Signal vs Noise (37signals) and become a "chef". That means talking about your "specialty" your "niche". Here a bit:

Lesson 9: Follow the Chefs

Jason called chefs the smartest business professionals. He explained this is because they are aware that you become famous and successful by giving knowledge away. For example, chefs have cooking shows and write cook books. Yet it doesn't stop their restaurants from being successful. In fact, he claimed they are probably more successful because of their sharing.

Lessons learned at 37 Signals: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/sxsw_lessons_learned_at_37signals.php

But I like to think that G&W is aimed at being a TechCrunch of Pakistan rather than being like SvN and talk about how to run a company, how to make design decisions, how to work in OpenSource etc. Instead, G&W should talk about the industry, about whats new, the ever-changing landscape, working business models, what works, what doesn't work etc.

But if TechCrunch is not to your liking then I would suggest you talk about your upcoming product, whats the magic in them, what makes them standout-- the chef stuff.

Lastly, monetizing your blog shouldn't come from users. Your target market is advertisers; they are your (potential) clients. I can see you already have Google Ads and Amazon referrals so you have some basic mechanism setup for monetization and theoretically, its not entirely free. As a matter-of-fact, I haven't come across a "free" popular blog in a very long time scobleizer.com? advertises his own book. SvN? Job board and advertise their blog. Joelonsoftware? Sells job postings, amazon referrals. So, there is no such thing as a free lunch, someone pays :)
