Updates: Ok this shot off a little firestorm so I need to clarify things further here!

1- There’s absolutely nothing wrong between PASHA and us. They’ve done a brilliant job of taking care of all aspects of SI even when we were busy elsewhere.

2- Thats the thing though – lately we’ve just been getting busier on other initiatives around our new-media publications, such as G&W and DFU. Its not fair to stay associated with SI if we’re not doing any part of the planning of it. The people who deserve credit should continue to take it further.

3- I will still be present in some of the upcoming SI events but as a panelist / participant and not an organizer.

4- G&W is evolving, but I’m not sure where to. We’re trying to see how to take it to the next level but we’ll just have to see what threads mature over the next couple of months. Until then, stay tuned.

5- Thanks to the people from the community who emailed me with their support. Hopefully whatever we’ll be doing next will be useful for everyone in the community.

Well this might be a surprise for some, but not for all. Green & White is not going to be an initiative partner on Startup Insiders moving forward – SI is a PASHA only event from now.

SI has grown immensely from our input over the past couple of months, and on its own it has evolved into a series of training sessions to walk potential young entrepreneurs-to-be through the multi-faceted process of starting companies, envisioning products and going through the pains of introducing them into the market.

We feel that while SI as it is is still useful to some people, that it can go on without us.What we want to focus on instead is a series of other initiatives to provide a compelling platform for startups that are already out there making things happen.

Moving forward, we would like to focus our inputs on finding ways of better helping existing entrepreneurs with brilliant ideas – people who are already going through their startup pains, so that they might be able to find actionable business support from our platform. Some of the entrepreneurs have mentioned their desire for Green & White to become a platform that helps startups to prepare for funding support, while others have asked us to provide activities like the BarCamp model where startups help other startups over constructive idea-building sessions. Others still hope that we will be able to expand the reach and depth of G&W’s news coverage of activities.

Hopefully we’ll be able to announce some of these initiatives over time.

For the moment, good luck to the SI team and lets hope it is able to evolve onto something bigger.

  • Hmm…

Why not you share suggestion from your side to make SI session more effective?

  • And how are the greater things you are doing on the side really that different from the current activities plannned or performed on the SI platform.

  • Jawwad,

The things we’re trying on G&W are very different from SI’s platform.

I’ll be working with some people from the community to see how they’d like us to get things done.

    Osama.

  • interesting development..

well I wish you all the best to whatever it is that G&W is trying to accomplish.

  • I’m confused. What is G&W trying to do?

  • here is my observation of what G&W has NOT being doing:

    1. Not covering interesting technology coming out of Pakistan or being created by Pakistanis around the world.

    2. Not covering startups that are based in Pakistan or even ran by Pakistanis.

There are enough startups that G&W introduced to us but then never really went back to see how they are doing. Case in point: Lootmar… i have been following their blog myself and i find that they are doing a lot of neat stuff that G&W should be covering..

PS: Sorry Osama, i know this post will really tick you off but i am just giving my 2cents.

  • @OB

I don’t agree with you. I remember first SI session and the time when Osama came towards me, shake hand and asked me “So, what is the name of your startup?” …. he is one of the great motivations forces behind these sessions…

Usually, every one loves results… but there are always confusion on execution of plans to get desire results … and we should consider ‘difference of opinion’ (if in case) as positive.

Osama, whatever you and G&W are doing … I hope your support will be continue for SI sessions and don’t forget we love to see entrepreneurs among us.

  • @Qasim: Thanks – keep tuned to whatever we end up doing to help you guys further.

@Obaid: True, but you know sometimes its because the startups in question disappear after a first show (hint :p)

  • @Qasim: I definitely agree with you. Osama has been a great but for last couple of weeks we were not getting any stories out of him..

@Osama: Yes they do.. or do they just go into stealth mode..

Either way I found that G&W has been doing great job. And today’s posts made my day!!

  • Osama, I wish you the best of luck with G&W..I enjoy your stories (mainly because you give me relevant news on entrepreneurship/innovation with a local context, which I can’t find on bbc.com or other news sites). Next time you’re in Islamabad, please do get in touch and I’d be happy to help you brainstorm on how to take this further. We’re planning a TiE Islamabad launch event next month. would be great if you could attend.

  • I’d definitely look forward to seeing you on upcoming SI sessions.

I love what Qurtaba are doing in a niche area of Urdu Language. Although their start was from Nan-Map for which they now have an iPhone App.There love for Urdu language related apps has been flourishing in recent months. Most of their apps are doing very well on app store, some impressive numbers for their popular Urdu apps are as follows.

    Food Connection Pakistan

I happened to be in Quetta on a business trip last month with no idea of where to dine alone. Being a typical Lahoriite, a die-hard food lover, it matters to me that I try the best food of the place I visit. So this is where FCPakistan came to my rescue. I simply logged in, typed in my desired specifications and got atleast 5 suggestions.

The listing included their opening times, specific facilities like ease for physically disabled customers, credit card acceptance, smoking areas, take away facility, whether valet parking was available or not, and even directions to get there! What more could you want.

    Although that was the…

OLX Pakistan Investing heavily in advertisement

OLX is a global online retailer and auction site. They have an impressive footprint in a little less than 100 countries, each with their own specific domain (like .pk for Pakistan and .in for India).

In Pakistan they have been operating under olx.com.pk for some time with people using it to sell things online.

Recently they have started advertising heavily on Television, a medium seldom used by online businesses previously. The ads (two of which have appeared ) are witty and fun to watch.

The most important factor of these adds is that they are being advertised on media which previously none of our online businesses have used.

    Most of…

Second Pakistan Blog Awards by CIO Faces severe criticism

CIO Pakistan started blog awards last year. Its is a good sign when some one takes initiative and starts some thing new. However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. And bloggers are one of the most hard people to win over, most of these are rebels in their own rights people who have started blogging to show the world their opinion…

Do We Vote : A great statistical tool by PakReport.org

Pakreport.org a tool which was instrumental in gathering statistics during the massive flooding in Pakistan, has created another study/stats gathering tool for our electoral activities. Interestingly its called do we vote

With political scene in Pakistan heating up it provides very valuable information to party supporters and their leaders.  A quick look at it shows the all known facts that people in rural areas take their voting more seriously than all of us supposedly educated and enlightened urban population.

Pakreport.org was an initiative launched by Faisal Chohan of BrightSpyre during the floods, the effort enabled people on the ground to send sms (the most spread out communication medium in country)…

Stay for the work not the perks

This is a revelation that came to me when I recently quit my comfy corporate job for the second time. If you are below 40 and some one asks you about how is your job going and your answer is not in tune of “I like my job because I love the work”.

You need to pause and asses your career, last time I answered this question my answer was “I like the job, because the benefits are good”, and that made me think (offcourse there were other factors as well). But if you are doing a job in which to satisfy your own self you have to look at…
