Startup Insiders – a joint effort of Green & White and PASHA – really took off in Karachi with SI4, which people claim was the liveliest and most inspiring one yet.

Jehan Ara (President, PASHA) compared the SI4 experience to a drug yesterday.

Jawwad Farid (CEO, Alchemy Technologies – the sponsor and host) went a step further. He said:

And you know between all of us here, heading back home it felt as good as the day I had proposed to Fawzia, interviewed at Goldman, walked back from my first class at Columbia, and held Amin, Salwa and Taha for the very first time.

Yup, it feels as if we are changing the world, one session at a time.

  • Indeed! it was the liveliest and most inspiring event of SI series with the audience not letting the speakers go! It was scheduled to be over by 8:30 but it continued till 10:30 :D

Ah.. i am pretty bad at Camera Handling, had to learn some lessons from Tahir :)

  • Guys

Would it be possible for you to post it on Youtube as well as google. The tube does not allow you to download the video, save it and share it offline.

    Jawwad

  • Firefox plugins give the ability to download youtube videos too.

  • Hi Jawwad… this is already on Google isnt it?

  • You have to enable downloading when you upload. As of now the SI video is not enabled.

  • Jawwad, try using http://www.keepvid.com for downloading videos from YouTube and Google Video and multitude of other streaming sites. I just downloaded this video and the size is merely around 130 megs – but wish I had it in avi or wmv format instead of flv.

  • Hello Osama and everyone,

I’m a bit late, but I’d like to say something regarding the Lahore SI. Great work done Osama and everybody else. But what Nash has pointed out in a post somewhere, were my sentiments exactly. Dumb questions don’t deserve time. And where all i see at greenwhite is a call for more and more people to join in at these events, i think on the contrary it should be much more exclusive. You guys are having great publicity no doubt, and it has its pleasures, but you are’nt really serving the startups by these events. I’ll give you an example:

I have a startup, started building it almost two years ago, been struggling ever since. I ask for advice and help a lot from my friends like Nash and others, and I would’ve loved to talk to you or some other experienced guys about all the problems, dos and don’ts and future prospects of my product. In a very casual environment. But at the SI session in lahore, it was more like a classroom where there were them and us. Most people were too young or too student-like to be entrepreneurs at that session. The volume was too low, i could’nt hear half the things being said. I could’nt find a chair. And I left early before the coffee break cause I was’nt there for a lecture but rather a casual session, where 1 entrepreneur is helping or advising a junior one. This has to be one on one, casual and discreet. I might not want to discuss my product and problems in front of a 100 people.

I hope you guys see my post and give your views on it. The way I see it, it should be in a way where an entrepreneur gives a briefing about what he does or wants to do, whether already having a startup or thinking about launching one, and then he is invited to these sessions. Where everybody knows everybody else. Like Nash pointed out that success stories are important, the problems and how the senior guys overcame them is much more inspirational, cause when young people are having so much problems, they want to hear that they are not alone.

    Regards.

  • Ahmed, thanks for the appreciation. the reason we don’t want to go exlcusive is a lot of startups don’t have the contacts to talk to these guys the moment we go exclusive i am sure most of the startups shy out. for example the 4th SI in karachi a person found out in the morning that there was a session he did not had time to register all we said was go in and join.
about questions and format it was first event inshallah we are trying to have format in it if you followed the 4si it had a question pattern and it was good,
The coffee session was there for the informal discussion you could have grabbed any veteran and discussed your issues with him, this happened in Islamabad that new startups grabbed successful ones had an informal chat over a cup of coffee. And these experienced people are very open to advice if you can grab their attention.
How ever thanks for taking time out to point these things we are working on a better format and your suggestions are really helpful. and good luck with your startup

  • I guess im also late to put my thoughts down on this one. I was fortunate enough to be in Karachi on a business trip when this happened, and i jumped on the chance to attend.

When i entered, i thought i had made a mistake.. it didn’t look as funfilled as the last one in isb. Boy was i wrong, once the QnA session took off, it was anything but!

Faisal Qureshi and Jawwad Farid, with their off-the-cuff remarks and ways of finding humor in every statement was just the right catalyst to put people at ease.

And the startup stories from giants like SI3 and Netsol really got the adrenaline flowing (atleast in me) and the ideas rolling. If they can do it, why not us.

I can safely say, that by the end of the session, i had found two new people to idolize in our IT industry. Saleem Ghauri (netsol) and Amer Hashmi (Si3). Both of them showed the basic ingredients needed (i believe) to startup and run a successful business. Passion, values and above all.. patriotism!! When both these gentlemen were talking, the passion and patriotism in their voices was obvious!

All in all, a very motivating event! Went on for FOUR hours but it was worth every minute!

  • 34:40 – moment to remember. I am compelled to say to Ms Jehan Ara, “you have excellent sense of humor”.

    Food Connection Pakistan

I happened to be in Quetta on a business trip last month with no idea of where to dine alone. Being a typical Lahoriite, a die-hard food lover, it matters to me that I try the best food of the place I visit. So this is where FCPakistan came to my rescue. I simply logged in, typed in my desired specifications and got atleast 5 suggestions.

The listing included their opening times, specific facilities like ease for physically disabled customers, credit card acceptance, smoking areas, take away facility, whether valet parking was available or not, and even directions to get there! What more could you want.

    Although that was the…

OLX Pakistan Investing heavily in advertisement

OLX is a global online retailer and auction site. They have an impressive footprint in a little less than 100 countries, each with their own specific domain (like .pk for Pakistan and .in for India).

In Pakistan they have been operating under olx.com.pk for some time with people using it to sell things online.

Recently they have started advertising heavily on Television, a medium seldom used by online businesses previously. The ads (two of which have appeared ) are witty and fun to watch.

The most important factor of these adds is that they are being advertised on media which previously none of our online businesses have used.

    Most of…

Second Pakistan Blog Awards by CIO Faces severe criticism

CIO Pakistan started blog awards last year. Its is a good sign when some one takes initiative and starts some thing new. However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. And bloggers are one of the most hard people to win over, most of these are rebels in their own rights people who have started blogging to show the world their opinion…

Do We Vote : A great statistical tool by PakReport.org

Pakreport.org a tool which was instrumental in gathering statistics during the massive flooding in Pakistan, has created another study/stats gathering tool for our electoral activities. Interestingly its called do we vote

With political scene in Pakistan heating up it provides very valuable information to party supporters and their leaders.  A quick look at it shows the all known facts that people in rural areas take their voting more seriously than all of us supposedly educated and enlightened urban population.

Pakreport.org was an initiative launched by Faisal Chohan of BrightSpyre during the floods, the effort enabled people on the ground to send sms (the most spread out communication medium in country)…

Stay for the work not the perks

This is a revelation that came to me when I recently quit my comfy corporate job for the second time. If you are below 40 and some one asks you about how is your job going and your answer is not in tune of “I like my job because I love the work”.

You need to pause and asses your career, last time I answered this question my answer was “I like the job, because the benefits are good”, and that made me think (offcourse there were other factors as well). But if you are doing a job in which to satisfy your own self you have to look at…
