The Startup Insiders session in Islamabad has now been confirmed. We were trying to see if we can move the dates to accomodate inter-city travel but the sponsors and panel had already committed the existing dates.

Startup Insiders #3 is being sponsored by LMK Resources and will be held on their premises in ETC next to the Marriot Islamabad.

It will be held on Thursday, January 31, from 6-9pm. Yes, this is one day before Startup Insiders 2 in Lahore – I suppose we’re numbering them in the order that they’re confirmed.

The Islamabad event also has an excellent set of panelists / mentors, and will definitely bring a very different set of insight than the Lahore panelists. So if you can, I’d recommend making it out to both events.

The entrepreneurs who will be coming to Startup Insiders #3 with their insight include:

  • Ovais Ashraf, CEO, Trivor Software / Trango

  • Faisal Chohan, CEO Cogilent Systems / Brightspyre ; possibly also Atif Mumtaz

  • Faizan Buzdar – CEO, Scrybe Corp.

  • Osama Hashmi, CEO, CDF Software - Me

  • Zahid Mirza, Netsol Technologies

  • Saeed Qadri, CEO, Voxel Communications

  • Faisal Qureshi, CEO, Kolachi Advanced Technologies

  • Jehan Ara, President, PASHA

(More are being lined up)

Also rumored to be attending are high-level execs from Telecom MNCs. As always, this event is a free for all session, but only innovative, open-minded entrepreneurs will find it engaging. Coffee and good conversations will flow freely.

I’m very interested in seeing how many people come to the Islamabad one, after 75-90 in the first in Karachi and an expected 100+ in Lahore.

I do know that Isb hosts a lot of product-focused companies and startups, some of the working in super-stealth mode with some great ideas. We also know that world class products such as Scrybe, Orgoo, Ooober, Ultimus, iKonami, (CDF Snip hoping to be world-class) and others are being created out of this region.

So really, I would be very interested in seeing the turnout in Islamabad.

Just as a reminder though,

  • Startup Insiders 3 will be held in Islamabad on January 31
  • Startup Insiders 2 will be held the next day in Lahore on Feb 1.

See you all there!

  • This is a great start and hope to see some great startups..

  • Woohoo! Nice! :D

  • Great initiative Osama !!
    Good Luck !!

  • Sarfraz R Ramay

It is a great idea and even a better initiative. i m myself a student of NIIT and i guess i will attending the meeting with my fellow batch students….there will be a lot us. i just wanted to clarify about the ideas that could be presented. Are only IT related business ideas welcomed or any business idea would do?

  • Sarfraz,

The things discussed can apply to all industries but the people and investors who are likely to show up will be most interested in Hi-tech innovative products.

    Hope that clarifies

  • Malik Muhammad Irfan

    Its really a great start!!!!!!!!!!

Wish you all best of luck.

  • this may become a great opportunity of startups… I really appreciate all the people involved..

    Looking forward…

    Ali Hammad

  • Osama, great initiatives!

Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend but I hope these are regular events so that I can also attend them someday.

  • Ali, Inshallah this will be regular activity for all three cities so keep watching this space for next one

  • This truly is an exciting initiative. Osama, We are in the process of launching a local Islamabad chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) http://www.tie.org, the world’s largest not-for-profit organization for entrepreneurs. You and I should chat about how to coordinate. I will be there on Thursday.

  • thanks Mr. Osama but that leaves me only one choice, “not to attend the session”. i m sorry i was very entusiastic about it cuz i thought it involved business ideas altogether

  • @Sarfraz

I don’t see why you shouldn’t attend. Even if you have no desire for a tech startup, you can still learn a thing or two from the experiences of these amazing entrepreneurs – I’m sure the session would be very enlightening for you (and everyone).

I, personally, would be willing to pay to listen to some of these people. Too bad, Jawwad and Faizan aren’t in Lahore’s SI.

  • sarfraz, hussnain is right, most of the problems faced by startups are same be it a tech industry or other wise you would greatly benefit from the experiences of the senior people, and would be motivated by talking to breed of youngsters who are willing to take a risk,

  • This really is a great initiative! I will make it tomorrow and represent TiE Islamabad. TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs), for those of you are not familiar with the organization, is the world’s largest not-for-profit organization for entrepreneurs, with headquarters based in Silicon Valley. We have just started up in Islamabad, and I look forward to meeting budding entrepreneurs who may be interested in joining.

  • Hi Osama,

Do I need to sign up for the Islamabad event somewhere or I can just show up?

    Best,
    Shuja Malik

  • Shuja, just show up.

  • Can I just walk in or am I required to obtain an invitation of some sort?

  • Oops, I see my question has already been answered!

  • A very nice initiative in the Islamabad Ecosystem. Lets pool in our resources between the Tie Islamabad Chapter and your outfit. Wishing all of you a very successful event.

    Engr. Mansoor Malik
    Founding Vice-President
    TiE Islamabad Chapter

Team at Qurtaba have added another front to their impressive Urdu language based apps, they have launched their Alif Bay Pay app for Amazon Kindle, as well. Earlier it was released on iTunes.

I love what Qurtaba are doing in a niche area of Urdu Language. Although their start was from Nan-Map for which they now have an iPhone App.There love for Urdu language related apps has been flourishing in recent months. Most of their apps are doing very well on app store, some impressive numbers for their popular Urdu apps are as follows.

    Food Connection Pakistan

I happened to be in Quetta on a business trip last month with no idea of where to dine alone. Being a typical Lahoriite, a die-hard food lover, it matters to me that I try the best food of the place I visit. So this is where FCPakistan came to my rescue. I simply logged in, typed in my desired specifications and got atleast 5 suggestions.

The listing included their opening times, specific facilities like ease for physically disabled customers, credit card acceptance, smoking areas, take away facility, whether valet parking was available or not, and even directions to get there! What more could you want.

    Although that was the…

OLX Pakistan Investing heavily in advertisement

OLX is a global online retailer and auction site. They have an impressive footprint in a little less than 100 countries, each with their own specific domain (like .pk for Pakistan and .in for India).

In Pakistan they have been operating under olx.com.pk for some time with people using it to sell things online.

Recently they have started advertising heavily on Television, a medium seldom used by online businesses previously. The ads (two of which have appeared ) are witty and fun to watch.

The most important factor of these adds is that they are being advertised on media which previously none of our online businesses have used.

    Most of…

Second Pakistan Blog Awards by CIO Faces severe criticism

CIO Pakistan started blog awards last year. Its is a good sign when some one takes initiative and starts some thing new. However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. And bloggers are one of the most hard people to win over, most of these are rebels in their own rights people who have started blogging to show the world their opinion…

Do We Vote : A great statistical tool by PakReport.org

Pakreport.org a tool which was instrumental in gathering statistics during the massive flooding in Pakistan, has created another study/stats gathering tool for our electoral activities. Interestingly its called do we vote

With political scene in Pakistan heating up it provides very valuable information to party supporters and their leaders.  A quick look at it shows the all known facts that people in rural areas take their voting more seriously than all of us supposedly educated and enlightened urban population.

Pakreport.org was an initiative launched by Faisal Chohan of BrightSpyre during the floods, the effort enabled people on the ground to send sms (the most spread out communication medium in country)…

Stay for the work not the perks

This is a revelation that came to me when I recently quit my comfy corporate job for the second time. If you are below 40 and some one asks you about how is your job going and your answer is not in tune of “I like my job because I love the work”.

You need to pause and asses your career, last time I answered this question my answer was “I like the job, because the benefits are good”, and that made me think (offcourse there were other factors as well). But if you are doing a job in which to satisfy your own self you have to look at…
