MySpyre.pk – A partnership between Google and Brightspyre

Something… hard to classify. Brightspyre has recently struck and distribution patnership with Google to offer a rebranded free version of Google Apps to the local market under the name MySpyre.pk

In other words, you can get a web-based email account that has the reliability of Google but with “locality” and integration with Brightspyre.

This is the first company in the local industry that Google has agreed to redistribute Apps. Google usually partners with ISPs to distribute their apps similar to Zimbra/Yahoo. However, in this market Google couldn’t find a single ISP that could individually influence the amount of users that Brightspyre enjoys.

The Brightspyre folks claim that they will explore what type of localized services they can create over the platform. They are also claiming a few thousand registered users for the service in just a few weeks.

It might prove to be a big win for both in the long term but for the moment I cant help but feel overwhelmingly “meh”.

What do you think? All the cynics out there – attack :)

  • is this an exclusive deal or just a custom application suite that anyone can purchase from google?

    http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/editions.html

anyways, they will need to seriously consult a good designer to make the service more appealing…

  • I second Obaid in the design part. A free email account with google’s stability and .pk is a welcoming edition.

  • We have provided the “user base” advantage / revenue to Google :)

  • yes its a very healthy and progressive sign. we must welcome and appreciate brightspyre efforts in introducing MySpyre.pk-

  • Are you sure this is a partnership. This is a simple google apps accounts ?

  • I believe its just a custom application suite. A lot of small/medium size companies uses this.

  • well its not the matter of custom application or google apps, the thing is which company in pakistan has any collaboration on google-gmail account???

So if they have done something, we should appreciate and its a one step ahead.. so we need to encourage them rather criticizing them.

  • SMAAK :- We are questioning the authenticity of Green White Coverage. We acknowledge the fact that its “Powered” by google- but that does not mean that its a partnership between google and MySpyer. You do a google search, and you only find G&W in results. Typical media hypes :)

  • Hira Khan,

Let’s put it this way – if you doubt the authenticity of Green & White, open a competitor yourself — give better news coverage.

Considering that you’re not, stop sitting there bitching about whether or not what we’re covering is accurate. Ask Brightspyre yourself.

  • Google has two types of partnerships for these types of things.

1- Google ISP Edition. This is a Google Apps interface that you can rebrand and offer for free. You earn a cut of Adsense revenue. To be eligible, you should be able to promise x00,000′s user accounts that you can influence.

2- A more direct partnership where you get reselling commissions for All Google Apps Premium Edition customers that you can generate for Google.

MySpyre is a mix between the two – they are offering a rebranded interface for free, but at the same time they have API-level access to their Premium platform.

    NOW

All of you should think about actually doing some research before starting these “Oh G&W lies I doubt this is true because I head that Google does somethign maybe”/

  • @Hira- Can you please define your so called level of authenticity in brightSpyre partnering with gmail?? Only google search that show partner info- is your level of justification?..wow.. what a professional way to decide the authenticity :P

    and thanks for acknowledging :)

  • Search Engines are reliable source of information, with limited effort. All other are more time consuming.
Osama: I think for slightly less “technical” users like me , a cross-reference check to a press-release of a company might be a good idea.

  • Hira,

We *are* the press release. There’s no one else covering the IT industry so regularly and professionally.

    Deal with it.

  • :) Thanks for the clarification and quick comment.

  • Osama: I don’t think telling other ppl not to bitch is an ideal way to deal with the conversation. When you are covering a press release there will be issues and everyone is entitled to their opinions. I must say I was surprised at your comment. You have lost some credibility after that post.

  • @Osama

“top sitting there bitching about whether or not what we’re covering is accurate.”

surprisingly disappointing attitude. Considering you’re commenting on your own blog, it might be prudent to take a little more than 5 minutes to post a more “cooled-down” and productive response, than a crude and counter-productive one.

  • Obaid, you’re right, and its not healthy.

I’m glad you’re surprised, because it indicates that I dont do this very often. So clearly something must be up in my life that has me on an edge… so I need some breathing room here.

And I dont do this often – you guys make up Green & White, not me nor my posts, but the helpful respectful community.

What I wish is for more of you to be involved in continuting to take it forward – write articles once in a while, point me to news, what have you.

Green & white has become bigger than me – its no longer osama’s blog, and with that the natural assumption is that the content must live on despite me.

Right now, its not – so until that happens the least you guys can do is keep my history with G&W in mind to not spend all of your energies in judging whether or not I’m reporting something accurate.

  • @Tayyab @Hira – My apologies for being in your face today… will be back to helping others soon.

  • Osama, we all need a break every now and then. It’s perfectly okay to lash out once in a while and let me tell you that you are doing a GREAT job. So just keep it up and take it a little easy… :)

  • Friends this has become more of a family which despite all problems wants to look on the bright side. but we specially me have had side lined writing for the blog. And the whole burden laid with osama. I am grateful to him that despite his extremely loaded schedule he still tries to keep the fire burning. Lets help him with keeping this light around so we help keep this family of optimists together i will start writing again you have any topic in particular let us know better yet have any story or write up lets put it up here. And osama thanks for keeping this hope alive.

  • Hey, anyone can sign up for this program and its free. Checkout this url

    http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/editions_spe.html

So u can start ur own email service with gmail back end… But all revenue goes to google :(

  • FAST-NUCES (multi-campus university having its campuses in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar) also uses Google Apps (Gmail) for all of the faculty and student mail accounts’ web-interface. Here is the link to the login page:

    http://mail.nu.edu.pk

  • I think brightspyre people are trying to fool their members. This doesn’t seem to be a partnership between BS and Google.

Everybody who owns a domain name can do this. I have also hosted my emails of http://shafiq.pk to Google Aps. Does this means that I have a partnership with Google?

  • If u are talking about the universities who have started using google aps, their service is limited to their students only- as MySpyre.pk is not limited or restricted to any group, their domain covering Pakistan.

    thanks.

  • Yeah smaak and all, you are right that many other websites are offering this service for limited users. But there is a problem of purchasing business edition or 30 days trail.

    http://www.myislamabad.com.pk
the above web is also trying to give it’s user free email account, but they are receiving their requests manually and after manual creation of email account they are sending an info mail to the secondary email address that email has been created.

I personally think that if this automatic sign up email function could be added on http://www.myislamabad.com.pk that can be more popular as compared to myspyre.pk because they are offering free sms and live radio FM 100 (Islamabad).

We should appreciate the collaborative efforts of intellectual people.

  • Why the services of myspyre.pk is not running? the server is not opening the myspyre.pk.

I love what Qurtaba are doing in a niche area of Urdu Language. Although their start was from Nan-Map for which they now have an iPhone App.There love for Urdu language related apps has been flourishing in recent months. Most of their apps are doing very well on app store, some impressive numbers for their popular Urdu apps are as follows.

    Food Connection Pakistan

I happened to be in Quetta on a business trip last month with no idea of where to dine alone. Being a typical Lahoriite, a die-hard food lover, it matters to me that I try the best food of the place I visit. So this is where FCPakistan came to my rescue. I simply logged in, typed in my desired specifications and got atleast 5 suggestions.

The listing included their opening times, specific facilities like ease for physically disabled customers, credit card acceptance, smoking areas, take away facility, whether valet parking was available or not, and even directions to get there! What more could you want.

    Although that was the…

OLX Pakistan Investing heavily in advertisement

OLX is a global online retailer and auction site. They have an impressive footprint in a little less than 100 countries, each with their own specific domain (like .pk for Pakistan and .in for India).

In Pakistan they have been operating under olx.com.pk for some time with people using it to sell things online.

Recently they have started advertising heavily on Television, a medium seldom used by online businesses previously. The ads (two of which have appeared ) are witty and fun to watch.

The most important factor of these adds is that they are being advertised on media which previously none of our online businesses have used.

    Most of…

Second Pakistan Blog Awards by CIO Faces severe criticism

CIO Pakistan started blog awards last year. Its is a good sign when some one takes initiative and starts some thing new. However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. And bloggers are one of the most hard people to win over, most of these are rebels in their own rights people who have started blogging to show the world their opinion…

Do We Vote : A great statistical tool by PakReport.org

Pakreport.org a tool which was instrumental in gathering statistics during the massive flooding in Pakistan, has created another study/stats gathering tool for our electoral activities. Interestingly its called do we vote

With political scene in Pakistan heating up it provides very valuable information to party supporters and their leaders.  A quick look at it shows the all known facts that people in rural areas take their voting more seriously than all of us supposedly educated and enlightened urban population.

Pakreport.org was an initiative launched by Faisal Chohan of BrightSpyre during the floods, the effort enabled people on the ground to send sms (the most spread out communication medium in country)…

Stay for the work not the perks

This is a revelation that came to me when I recently quit my comfy corporate job for the second time. If you are below 40 and some one asks you about how is your job going and your answer is not in tune of “I like my job because I love the work”.

You need to pause and asses your career, last time I answered this question my answer was “I like the job, because the benefits are good”, and that made me think (offcourse there were other factors as well). But if you are doing a job in which to satisfy your own self you have to look at…
