I recently got compelled to get in touch with my friends at Acrologix, who were awarded the contract to develop an ERP for auto parts manufacturers industry of Pakistan a.k.a. PAAPAM. They have coined the name AutoPLUS for the ERP. I met Salman Mustafa, Project Manager at Acrologix

Me:

Right of the bat, explain to us what is AutoPlus?

Salman Mustafa:

AutoPLUS is a comprehensive ERP, which consists of six integrated modules namely ‘Human Resource Management’, ‘Finance & Accounts’, ‘Raw Material Inventory’, ‘Sales’, ‘Production’ and ‘Finished Goods Inventory’ modules. It covers the complete business cycle of an auto part manufacturing industry. It has many features for the users like its user-oriented interfaces and its exhaustive reporting features. We (Acrologix) have developed this product in collaboration with Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) under its Industrial Automation Project, which is mainly focused on MIS revival of local industries.

Me:

What’s the biggest hurdle, which you faced in this Project?

Salman Mustafa:

I believe that hurdles are good because they improve quality of your work. Hurdles were many but I’ll mention the biggest one we faced. Lack of User Interest due to Government Funded Project: As its a PSEB funded project and not by the beneficiary industrial units so naturally lack of interest was there, which caused fewer inputs by the target users. You know that this kind of situation may lead to the project failure because we don’t know that either we are focusing on the right solutions of real life problems or not. We overcame this situation by hiring Industry experts as our consultants. Their vast experience in auto part manufacturing industry really complements the lack of user input situation and the result is in front of us in the shape of product like ‘AutoPLUS’.

Me:

I understand that the project is based on a LAMP stack. Why you have used open source technology? And are there any difficulties associated with this step?

Salman Mustafa:

As far as use of open source technology is concerned its Government of Pakistan policy because use of open source technology rules out almost all type of overhead costs like licensing etc. Technically, the LAMP stack has achieved a status where you see many enterprise products coming on top of it. Big vendors are pushing for adoption of the stack. Its not the technology which is to be blamed for failed projects, it’s the method and right use of practices, which makes a project successful.

Now come to the difficulties portion of the question; yes there are some difficulties like non-availability of LAMP trained resources but we have overcome difficulties like these by in-house training of fresh but conceptually strong graduates. We developed the base framework just like our desktop-Microsoft based solutions and later developed around it

Me:

So How do you compare Open Source with Microsoft Platform, as majority of your company solutions are based on the Microsoft platform and development technologies?

Salman Mustafa:

Each platform has its pros and cons but I think open source technologies are here to stay. Many interesting things are coming up in these technologies.

After successful completion of the software, for web-based environment I don’t feel any major disadvantages.

Me:

Which module of AutoPLUS do you think took more time to develop and why?

Salman Mustafa:

‘Production’ module, time wise  not only in analysis phase but also in development; and its main reason is difference between type and processes of production of almost each unit. In this situation the statement of work for Production module is “Production module is this much capable that it can handle almost all type of productions even with their minute details in business oriented fashion”. This was the biggest challenge for us.

Me:

How you justify the ROI of AutoPLUS?

Salman Mustafa:

Most important question; I must say. As per statistics recently published in almost all renowned newspapers of Pakistan; Industrial users of AutoPLUS under PSEB banner has achieved 75% reduction in human resource usage and 85% reduction in time investment by the implementation of AutoPLUS (Reference: These figures are from a recent study conducted by PSEB under their impact analysis program). I think after this statement there is no need to further justify ROI of AutoPLUS.

Me:

What is Total Cost of Ownership of AutoPLUS?

Salman Mustafa:

Form the day one in this project, we have targeted the achievement of minimum possible Cost of Ownership and we have achieved the same. Again I am referring the impact analysis study of PSEB as I referred above; as per this study Cost of Ownership of AutoPLUS for industrial units under PSEB banner is almost 15% of the total cost which they are saving through this ERP. Is not it Great?

Me:

Any thing which you want to say to the audience?

Salman Mustafa:

If you are a Pakistani then please do promote proud Pakistani products like AutoPLUS and if you are from rest of the world then I take this opportunity to promote my country Pakistan as a reliable software outsourcing market.

  • I worked on this product as QA Analyst, I am proudly contributing my exprience on this product, it was a realy good effort in open source technology. I have few figures to share with you people about this product, proudly:

Though 50% to 60% valatility of requirements occured while development of Autoplus but even then in this product total 90% of bugs identified by us while testing were fixed before shipping it to the client. And this is a big achievement within the deadline and creeping requirements.
    Best of Luck to AutoPlus

  • Hassan Tahir

I am a proud team member of this product. Being a system analyst of AUTOplus, I would like to inform you that AUTOPlus can compete with any ERP System in the world, specially related to Autoparts industries.

As we ended up with a product like AUTOplus after gathering all the information and incorporating it into the ERP right from small manufacturing industries, importers, distributers, dealers and manufacturers on larger scale, I would say that it is a real big achievement.

It is an open gateway to Pakistan in ERP development and also serving as beacon house for other software houses of Pakistan.

    GOOD LUCK AUTOplus !!!

  • Hi,

Mr.Shahid Manzoor Said: “total 90% of bugs identified”.

I am confused, is it a stable figure? Because fixing bug is later on issue. I am afraid if it’s still working perfectly or still having issues. crrrappppssss….

    Da Seeker

  • Can someone tell me, if AutoPlus’ analysis and development was up to the mark. Though I have heard Acrologix is an ISO certified company.

90% buggy application :: how can even it be in relation to an ISO certified company.

    whoolaaaa

  • Mr. “DA Seeker”, please read Mr. Shahid’s statement carefully. He said that 90% bugs were fixed before shipment. It means 90% bugs were fixed and verified (Whole QA cycle) and then it was shipped to the client. Btw this application is still running successfully in the companies.

Business Incubation: False Hopes and Shattered Dreams…

When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.

Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

    Home & Cars Expo 2012

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.

First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended).  There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

    Another SHAM ICT Funding Project

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.

The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

    8th Layer of Networking

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.

The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…
