Um… but you’re saying: “Nothing’s different”?

Ofcourse, nothing looks different, but then lets remember that our product isn’t the website of Green & White, its the content!

After what’s been perhaps my longest break away from Green & White, and after one of the best 5 months I’ve seen in all of the communities I’ve created in the past, its time to take Green & White up a notch.

…and to think its just been 5 months since the launch, but oh the lessons we have learnt. All in all, Alh last month we had over 45,000 visitors and we appreciate this faith in our product.

Here’s what is going to be “new” and “beta” about Green & White from now on:

1- No more unjust rants –

We’re professionals, we can do better than that. If we DO criticize or rant against someone, we WILL have insight and constructive suggestions for that person / company to improve.

2- Analyze, or go home

I started Green & White with other consultants so that we could offer our analysis to industry news — while breaking news has a warm fuzzy feeling too, we dont want to break a news unless we have analysis as well that will take time.

3- Community Power

That means you! Green & White has some of the strongest, most engaged communities in Pakistan and its really you guys that make this platform what it is. We’re going to make a number of efforts to empower you all even more, help the community get together not just online but also offline with activities. Feel free to give me some ideas at osama@greenwhite.org so we can build tyres out of those ideas and start kicking them around our heads.

4- Entrepreneurs will prevail –

We’re going to speed up our voluntary efforts for the betterment of entrepreneurs in Pakistan — now that the world is noticing innovators in Pakistan, it is time to build some inspiration, hope and practical help for the few and the brave with fires in their hearts.

We know we could do a LOT to help entrepreneurs (in terms of raising awareness, help connecting to investors or potential customers) but we’ll need your help as well — everyone has to take some time out despite their insanely-busy startup schedule to help us all get to the next level. Email me your ideas and thoughts on this.

If you are in the early stages of your business, tell me what you do and I could either highlight you here.

If you’re a successful businessman or industry leader but now want to help new innovative companies, get in touch with me and I can route you to the right people.

Note again: This is a voluntary effort — lets all be better than everything bad about society around us and stop thinking only in self-interest and lets get involved.

5- Evilness with not prevail

Simply put, we will not allow Green & White to be a platform for libel against any individual or company. We’ve gotten pretty good at filtering the genuine commenters from people who’re coming here just to attack or defame someone else.

To ensure that the people and companies that are highlighted get protection against libel, we will be a bit more strict about removing comments that we feel have mal-intent.

The best way a comment being removed is (1) Dont leave an anonymous comment (2) Make sure you add a URL that we can go to to check out who you are.

What else?

More things hopefully in time, but for now we’ve also thrown in more reading space, an actual working “top-10 daily posts” widget, and fixed the email alert issue (sending blank emails).

What do you think of the new look? Give us your thoughts below:

  • Great initiative – I wish you all the best and would like to see more quality stuff from you all

    Awesome work

  • Glad to see G&W improving! :)
Btw, I don’t think I quite actually understood the ‘anonymous comment’ bit. What IF I don’t have any URL worth putting up? or don’t want to? :/

  • You can put your company’s / employer’s URL, your universities (if you’re a student), or to a blog or something…

The basic idea is that the commenters should be willing to show some ownership of their words.

Generally though, we’ll know that frequent comments are “ok”… this mostly applies to infrequent commenters or first-time commenters.

  • interesting!

looking forward to being a part of this community osama.

  • i stumbled across your blog a couple of days ago, was wondering why i hadn’t discovered it sooner.

Anyways appreciate the efforts and the quality here!
    good work!

  • Thank you for all these kind words

Business Incubation: False Hopes and Shattered Dreams…

When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.

Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

    Home & Cars Expo 2012

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.

First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

NOTE: This is a sponsored post

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended).  There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

    Another SHAM ICT Funding Project

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.

The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

    8th Layer of Networking

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.

The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Thiel Fellowship: right idea, wrong approach

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Bay Area hedge fund manager Peter Thiel started a Fellowship program in his name about a year ago trying to capitalize not on start ups, but the smart kids who may actually come up with the next billion dollar idea.

Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…
