When Babar reported the MIT Business Acceleration Program, there were a lot of us who lamented on the fact that the conditions set were not applicable to many startups or people who were thinking of coming on board the entrepreneur side.

Here is some good news for all.

The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) have launched their business plan competition. According to the details they are also going to give participants a week long workshop by Industry Seasoned Entrepreneurs. So if you had been thinking of showing your brilliant idea to someone or of judging the feasibility of it, this is a great chance for you. It will place you in a position to be evaluated by top entrepreneurs of the industry (The list of Mentors overlooking this program is really impressive and includes CEOs from leading IT companies such as Techlogix, Systems Ltd, Cressoft, and more). Important info about the competition (according to the website) is as follows:

Prizes are Rs. 500,000, Rs. 300,000 and Rs. 200,000 for first second and third position,

Deadline to submit executive summary – 7th October.

Here is the link to the actual web site;

Side note: I love the title of Khudee given to the competition. In light of that, here is the first verse of Iqbal’s Poetry for all you aspiring entrepreneurs… Khudi ko kar buland itna … (for our foreign visitors this translates into, Take your self to such a height…)

  • I think the biggest prize of all will be the mentoring — such Rs.500,000 could set you up with a good camera, a server, a professionally design website or so…

… but what you will learn from the experience you will likely remember for a long time.

  • i was waiting for this after all the comments on the MIT Business Acceleration Program

  • Great program. Mentoring & Entrepreneurship programs are both very strong elements in the TiE programs. Having said that I am told by participants of the MIT BAP Program that the mentoring element is extremely strong. So whereas you are right Osama about many of the startups not having a chance to even qualify for that, mid-sized companies are benefiting greatly from it. The TiE program will be of more benefit to young startups. I am delighted to see so much activity happening in this area. There is more to come by the way.

  • @Osama – Is it possible to have interviews with the participants of the MIT BAP Program? maybe you can start a new series just like you did for Uraan.

  • Wonderful idea Ali – in fact with the participants of both programs.

  • Ali, that’s a great idea… I’ll have to track down some of the participants (anyone with leads pls introduce them to me) and then we could work with you guys to make it happen.

Jehan, more to come? Sounds great, but we dont even get a teaser? Youtube video? Hype?

  • Osama, I can get you a list of participants. Give me a couple of days.

You will have to wait a bit for the teaser regarding what more is on the way.

  • That’s great Jehan, lets get cracking on this.

We could discuss the “whats more” area offline — maybe there are ways in which we can support those efforts or get involved.

P.S. isn’t the power of blogs and communities amazing?

  • Great news. I’ve been interacting with TiE in the US for a while. Over there TiE is mainly an Indian group and OPEN is the Pakistani counterpart. From the description of the TiE Lahore chapter, I am glad to see that TiE is working as a group with broad and solid base in Pakistan.

  • I have had the privilege of attending such a program – the MIT Business Acceleration Program (mentioned above at a couple of places). And let me tell you, it has been an awesome experience! The sheer motivation and inspiration that you get from watching and listening to these industry leaders, the mentors, talk about what they have achieved, how they have gone about it etc. Also, the business networking opportunities that you gain are just invaluable. It was really really good … in fact, it IS good, as it’s still on-going.

However, I do have a query/concern regarding such programs. Will your idea … your business plan … be safe? Would someone not extract your ideas and implement them on their own, or through someone they know? Yeh, I am a bit paranoid in this regard (I shouldn’t be).

P.S. I just stumbled upon this site and am simply amazed by the quality and content here. Awesome! Never heard of G&W before though.

  • i just realized that the deadline is extended to 1st November

Business Incubation: False Hopes and Shattered Dreams…

When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.

Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

    Home & Cars Expo 2012

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.

First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended).  There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

    Another SHAM ICT Funding Project

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.

The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

    8th Layer of Networking

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.

The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Thiel Fellowship: right idea, wrong approach

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Bay Area hedge fund manager Peter Thiel started a Fellowship program in his name about a year ago trying to capitalize not on start ups, but the smart kids who may actually come up with the next billion dollar idea.

Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…
