Wateen Fumbles with WiMAX Launch Campaign

September 7, 2007 1:26 am 6 comments

wateenwimax.JPGIn this post we take a look at the role of advertising in building brand equity, using the case of Wateen’s recent WiMAX launch. Advertising is paid form of marketing promotion in which the sponsor is advertised and the message is controlled. Brand Equity refers to the value built-up in a brand. It is measured on a scale determining the extent of customer awareness. Besides awareness, brand equity is also directly related to the consumer’s experience with the brand itself. This experience finally decides the fate of product in terms of success and brand loyalty or failure within the potential target audience.

Within Marketing Mix i.e. Target market and 4P’s (Product, Price, Placement, Promotion), Product refers to the promise made to the customer or solution provided to the customer. Value is the perceived difference between the costs spent by the customer against achieved benefits. The lower the cost in relation to the benefits the lower is the value.

Hence, marketing communication or advertising during the product launch is a strategic decision and must be handled with care. Launching the product or service aggressively without practically placing it or making it available might bring critically negative impact on brand reputation. Such campaign destroys instead of building a brand. It is just like a promise made to the customer and then not being fulfilled. Such mistake at launch stage, specifically in case of a product like WiMax which still have to struggle a lot in getting mass awareness and with delivery issues, can severely disrupt the company’s and brand’s image within early adaptors of the product.

See Wateen’s ad in print media (click on thumbnail to see larger image). This is related to product launch aggressively offered all the products in line with core focus on triple play. Wateen’s new website is also much better than the previous one and offers product & marketing information in detail. However on practically calling the Toll Free number on next day of advertisement, one finds a telemarketer with inadequate information on all the products and delivery time of 2months. Prospects are being asked to register online and are being told that sales team will contact them in 6 to 8 weeks. However there is definitely some good news for DHA residents (in Lahore) where finally some services are available. However, residents maintained that it is the Triple Play currently being offered and not the WiMax. Even in case of Triple Play services, Wateen is not actually offering FTTH, instead Co-axial cables are being routed from the OFC distribution boxes.

While doing advertisement during product launch, companies must behave strategically realistic when the market is competitive and buyers have become knowledgeable. Wateen does have some exciting projects and plans ahead and they are acting quite aggressively but enterprises like Wateen Telecom, must advertise product/service offering only when the product is ready to deliver instead of advertising plans on paper.

  • I think Wateen is ready to launch it services and due to bad political conditions the uncertainity is every where now i think they are waiting for some good and proper time to launch their service so people dont get frustrated they have invested and they wont throw it away but not launching they must have some plans so wait and remember dont think about scams like warid they they gona offer dubai calls for local rate and wateen isnot gona offer its services for cheap they are to make profits so come out of dreams and look for better serive rather cheap :)

  • How its market reputation now?

  • Well according to our own survey, it was a successfull launch of WiMAX service by wateen.

BUT… Just after a few days (not more then 20 days) when sales of Wateen reached at 70 connections in Jhelum (Pakistan) all service suddenly jammed and people came out on streets.

The issue was “NO INDOOR COVERAGE” in Jhelum and All technical staff either its located in Islamabad or Lahore had no answer that what is going on.

According to a regional manager or RSM of wateen North Mr.Nomaan Shafaat and Technical Head of Wateen Mr.Khurram and Zulfiqar Ali faraaz it was due, just because of ANY reflected signals that keep users connected for more then 20 days and 30 days of Demo lines.

Now the thing is, that the users who spent “19000″ rupees buying that thing are just in need to break it up.

    Any ideas Users?

    Food Connection Pakistan

I happened to be in Quetta on a business trip last month with no idea of where to dine alone. Being a typical Lahoriite, a die-hard food lover, it matters to me that I try the best food of the place I visit. So this is where FCPakistan came to my rescue. I simply logged in, typed in my desired specifications and got atleast 5 suggestions.

The listing included their opening times, specific facilities like ease for physically disabled customers, credit card acceptance, smoking areas, take away facility, whether valet parking was available or not, and even directions to get there! What more could you want.

    Although that was the…

OLX Pakistan Investing heavily in advertisement

OLX is a global online retailer and auction site. They have an impressive footprint in a little less than 100 countries, each with their own specific domain (like .pk for Pakistan and .in for India).

In Pakistan they have been operating under olx.com.pk for some time with people using it to sell things online.

Recently they have started advertising heavily on Television, a medium seldom used by online businesses previously. The ads (two of which have appeared ) are witty and fun to watch.

The most important factor of these adds is that they are being advertised on media which previously none of our online businesses have used.

    Most of…

Second Pakistan Blog Awards by CIO Faces severe criticism

CIO Pakistan started blog awards last year. Its is a good sign when some one takes initiative and starts some thing new. However its also difficult to introduce this into an already budding field of new media in Pakistan. Last years (or two years back now since its 2012)  Awards were initiated so as it is expected it faced initial growing up pains. It always takes time for such thing to wins the trust of the community. And bloggers are one of the most hard people to win over, most of these are rebels in their own rights people who have started blogging to show the world their opinion…

Do We Vote : A great statistical tool by PakReport.org

Pakreport.org a tool which was instrumental in gathering statistics during the massive flooding in Pakistan, has created another study/stats gathering tool for our electoral activities. Interestingly its called do we vote

With political scene in Pakistan heating up it provides very valuable information to party supporters and their leaders.  A quick look at it shows the all known facts that people in rural areas take their voting more seriously than all of us supposedly educated and enlightened urban population.

Pakreport.org was an initiative launched by Faisal Chohan of BrightSpyre during the floods, the effort enabled people on the ground to send sms (the most spread out communication medium in country)…

Stay for the work not the perks

This is a revelation that came to me when I recently quit my comfy corporate job for the second time. If you are below 40 and some one asks you about how is your job going and your answer is not in tune of “I like my job because I love the work”.

You need to pause and asses your career, last time I answered this question my answer was “I like the job, because the benefits are good”, and that made me think (offcourse there were other factors as well). But if you are doing a job in which to satisfy your own self you have to look at…
