In a larger context this is an amazing trend if you think about it — a newspaper realizes that the traditional media push model of sending breaking news “to the presses” to deliver in the morning is dying. There might just be SO much news out there that blogs are the best way of publishing content across instantly.

But I wonder why they chose Urdu. Any thoughts?

  • Osama, that’s certainly an interesting trend. Do you know of any research on the potential of urdu content in the Pakistani cyberspace. Conventional understanding says that people with access to the internet are educated and would much rather see English content. Is this really the case?

  • Adnan,

Yes, that’s what conventional wisdom tells you.

But dont discredit the reach of Internet Kiosks all over the country, which are not being introduced in smaller cities in PK.

More Urdu content makes sense for that environment, and news that is distributed cheaply (i.e thorugh the blog) also makes sense for that environment.

  • Well, BBC has urdu section where users blog and comment. Jang is late starter in all e-areas.

Main disadvantage of working in Urdu content is that it has very low online advertising inventory available. One has to rely on local sponsorships to keep the things going.

  • Adnan, one would like to think that all those who are educated in this country and comfortable conversing and writing in English but nothing could be further from the truth. Yes we have a good number of people in Pakistan who speak English with a neutral accent and can read and write English very well – but this is mainly true in the major urban cities and that too with a small percentage. You will find that if content is available in Urdu, a lot more people will be interested in reading it in Urdu. And why should that not be true? After all, the Chinese, the French, the Germans and the Koreans are all more at home communicating in their own languages. I am all for making content available not only in Urdu but also in the regional languages. With the cost of hardware more than likely to go down further and with content being provided on mobile phones, there is a huge population that will just love to be able to access content in a language that is their own.

  • To proliferate urdu content further, Web-dev frameworks need to be created by local open source enthusiasts that allow others to create this content very quickly and intuitively. Any takers?

  • Many people I know prefer the urdu version of BBC. I feel that the expression i get from Urdu can’t be matched by English
try replacing am “Aap” of Urdu with a You :)

  • I expect them to start publishing their news in English in the coming days. Reaching to many is good but in the long when the other will also jump in, it would be hard for them to compete. Perhaps, The News, will be having plans to start their own blog.

Anyway, this a good step and Yes… Osama! One Question that needs to be answered. Whether the local open source will help make this possible? and if they are making efforts, when can we expect the output?

The title i can suggest for the Jang Blog…. JALONG.. :)

  • Bilish, Jang and TheNEws are part of same group of news papers. they already have their own web sites which are updated daily. plus they have a latest news section
    http://thenews.jang.com.pk/
    http://search.jang.com.pk/urdu/

also jang has a very good idea of scanned news paper. at this site. this is exactly the same news paper that goes into the print. adds included, the only thing missing is the feel of paper :)
    http://ejang.jang.com.pk/jm/

  • But blog is a different ball game, and at the top of their blog, they have mentioned and tried to explain it to the reader, that what is the core concept behind any blog. People can come up with their own discussions. I don’t see that happening at the moment on their e-paper website.

  • Osama
..the thread on Urdu is interesting and answers
    my question…
Your comment on open source..i have an alliance who is producing open source training manuals..can you tell me the exact problem to be solved?
He might well be interested in including that in his manuals…..
PS… He has a name techies would die for ….

  • Jehan
Your comment on language is spot on and matches all the research i have done..What always amazes me is how many speak english when they don’t have to…
What most webmasters don’t know is if you add the same content in another language on your website it is counts as new content by the SE’s.Thus the content can be increased by a factor of 2..or 7 if you have 7 different languages..This is one reason i am adding Chinese to testmyidea and hopefully Urdu as i am aiming for those who do not speak English well……..i just need more poor within reach of internet to benefit them………

  • very interesting, but I don’t agree with you

  • @Osama.
you will surprised, if you write any thing in english , they will translate those sentences in urdu with urdu script, obviously they are not using any automation, but human hands are invloved overthere.

  • Thanks for information.

Shukoor Ahmed ran for a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1998, after coming to America a decade earlier from Hyderabad, India. Campaigning door-to-door, he was surprised so many voters did not know who represented them!

After his race ended slightly short of victory, he took advantage of his Master’s degree in Computer Technology and Political Science to build StateDemocracy.org, a website he launched in 2001 to connect citizens and lawmakers. His website’s motto encapsulated its mission:

Business Incubation: False Hopes and Shattered Dreams…

When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.

Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

    Home & Cars Expo 2012

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.

First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended).  There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

    Another SHAM ICT Funding Project

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.

The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

    8th Layer of Networking

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.

The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Thiel Fellowship: right idea, wrong approach

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Bay Area hedge fund manager Peter Thiel started a Fellowship program in his name about a year ago trying to capitalize not on start ups, but the smart kids who may actually come up with the next billion dollar idea.

Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…
