Being a Professional in the ICT Industry, let’s see how to make the most out of attending a
career fair.

What You Should Seek in the Career Fair

1. Find the trends

If you are someone who has yet to discover your field, or want to explore other professions, a career fair is the best place to do so.

You will find serious employers exhibiting the professions they are working in. You will also find exciting and adventerous startups as well as seasoned corporates all under one roof.

So if you have been wondering where the industry is heading, what qualities/skills are in demand in recent days, the best option is to ask people who are present at the career fair. Consider it a platform for exploring your own interests and matching them with things that are going on in the industry.

Remember, as I mentioned earlier, companies have actually paid to be there to talk to you — so if you go to them you will find them very open and welcoming. Think about it! For one whole day they will focus only on attracting you to their company — doesn’t that make you feel special? So don’t lose this opportunity to invest some time for your own professional growth.

2. Look for interesting Work Avenues

Whether you are a recent graduate or a professional looking to switch your job, this event provides you with the best opportunity to look for new work avenues. The best thing is that they are all in one place waiting to accept your CV, and tell you about their vision.

3. Get the attention you deserve

Usually when you go for an interview to an organization you are the one in need and they are the ones hiring. At career fairs the situation is reversed. The companies are the ones taking the time to attract you , while you are in a position to ask questions. So learn what you are worth in the industry. This is especially true if you think that you are working in a domain which you think is heading to a dead end. Visiting the career fair will open avenues and give you a good morale boost

4. Practice your skills

This is a lose nothing opportunity for you. You can try taking interviews and learn from your mistakes. If you have any issues with confidence or your communication skills, this is the best oppurtinity to polish those up. Since the pressure in the fair will be much less than what you experience in a interview room, you can relax and highlight your qualities.

5. Learn from others

You can talk directly to people who have been in the industry. If your faith in your industry has been shaken up in anyway, you can meet people present at the fair and on booths who can guide and encourage you.

6. Find your strengths.

You will not see a gathering of such multi dimensional domain people sitting together anywhere else. You can evaluate which domain/field suit you better, what your strengths and weaknesses are, what does the industry require from you as a professional. And then you can work on those skills.

Guidelines for making the best experience

Here are a few basic guidelines for participating;

a. Dress Formally

Though it is not a formal interview, still employers may take instant on the spot interviews. Be ready. Dressing up formally won’t hurt you, but coming in casually might lessen your chances of making a good impression in case of a surprise interview. Also it will distinguish you from non-serious by-standers.

b. Take your CV along

Make sure to take copies of your updated CVs with you. If you have not recently updated your CV or are a fresh graduate/student who has not written a CV these guidelines may help you – here is the link .

c. Be an early bird

The event itself is a taxing process for the employers. Try to get there early in the day when the exhibitors are fresh and energetic.

d. Be enthusiastic

Show your interest when you visit a booth and ask the employer about information you don’t expect to find online. Be genuinely interested in knowing about the company before applying. The most eye catching candidates are the ones radiating energy in such large gathering.

Business Incubation: False Hopes and Shattered Dreams…

When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.

Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

    Home & Cars Expo 2012

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended).  There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

    Another SHAM ICT Funding Project

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.

The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

    8th Layer of Networking

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.

The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Thiel Fellowship: right idea, wrong approach

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Bay Area hedge fund manager Peter Thiel started a Fellowship program in his name about a year ago trying to capitalize not on start ups, but the smart kids who may actually come up with the next billion dollar idea.

Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…
