If you’re a freelance web developer / designer, I have an interesting proposition for you.

We are looking for ONE volunteer to help us optimize Green & White and make it faster to load.

Currently the main page downloads approx 680KB of data, which means about 13 secs on a DSL connection or about 1 minute or more on Dialup.

We want someone to help by optimizing the code, the image sizes, the server settings, caches and more to ensure we can serve pages very quickly.

Knowledge of WordPress (the engine we run G&W on) will be great to have, and perhaps necessary.

In return I will highlight your freelance profile and portfolio here at Green & White, and you will gain a customer reference (mine) to use with your work!

Sound fair?

If you are interested, Email me at osama@greenwhite.org

  • After spending few minutes on your page loading stats, here are some suggestions:

    - WP has an option to serve posts in gzip format if browser supports that (Options > Reading). This means that the page will be served as compressed file and browser will decompress it on run time. Enable this option for faster download on supporting browsers.

    - Control image size. For example, size of the sabzi wala image (500X375px) is 177K. Currently you are pulling it from Flickr hence 177K is downloaded every time the page is refreshed. However if you save it with your post, the displayed size (285x214px) will be 24K – That will certainly make huge impact on page loading time.

    - Use Alt tags with images. This way users don’t have to wait for an image to open and can scroll down to see whats next. This is also beneficial for browsers that have images turned off.

    - Reduce post length on main and category pages. You can use the Post Teaser Plugin to show limited number of words (say 100 words per post) on main and category pages with a link to full post. This will improve page download time as well as reduce current vertical scroll.

Hope this helps. Also, If you find a capable WP designer in Pakistan, let me know as well :)

  • Kashif,

    Thanks for the suggestions.

The guys who designed this G&W version weren’t bad but they’re not available. Besides, they were designers not optimizers.

  • A web designer should be an optimizer too. Unless you don’t know how a page is going to render on user browser, you won’t be able to deliver good UIs.

  • The main navigation buttons on top are having a file size of 10KB each, that can be reduced. Adobe PS “Save for Web” does it brilliantly.

The total size of external multimedia files is 19676 bytes, which is between 4K and 20K. Using Flash Vector capabilities.. We can sort that out…

I am interested to do this job.. I am a Freelancer…

    and luckily i am from Pakistan… :)

  • one more thing this particular page is using almost 7 CSS files… way above the normal.. we can cut down that…

and 2 or 3 External files will make it flow much smoothly.. because it has to parse all the Cascading Style Sheet Code…every-time the page is loaded into the browser….

  • One more thing that need fixing

The total size of the home page is 630596 bytes, which will load in 142.68 seconds on a 56Kbps modem. Consider reducing total page size to less than 30K to achieve better speed on 56Kbps, as most of the surfers in Pakistan use Dialup Connections.

    Bilish

  • stumbled upon the page “Get Your Badge” and observed that the guys that worked for your website did an average job on the appearance of the badges.

  • Bilish, you sure did a complete autopsy of the web site :)

  • so is it good or bad?

  • G&W has the potential to grow, The quality of the content is very good and helpful for its readers.
Brand needs some more tightness and friendliness towards its visitors.

    Good work.. Osama

  • I have no idea about web page designs. but the things you are saying shows your technical abilities, i.e they are actual facts and figures that would make the analysis a good one :) if you would have just said that the site is heavy i can make it light i would have doubted your abilities ;)

  • So what’s your role on this website?
    you write..i guess…

  • Bilish, that’s a great analysis – I’ll get in touch with you on email to get going further.

I’m the Managing Editor for G&W and Qazi’s our spearhead author for the career counseling area.

  • Oh and Qazi will be presenting at the PASHA Career Expo in Lahore tomorrow – do look him up.

  • hmm seems interesting let me know if i can re-invent greenwhite.org….gtalk { zeeshanhasan at gmail }

  • Osama

I just sent you an email.

Business Incubation: False Hopes and Shattered Dreams…

When a 19th century romantic French writer by the name of Victor Hugo said “Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” he obviously could not envision Pakistani bureaucracy. Not only can it reduce an idea to nothing more than its meager skeletal remains squirming in its own vile, it too often does.

Come 2004, the IT bubble is about to burst in a military run, democratic, American influenced politically independent subcontinent country by the name of Pakistan. It is here in our story that along comes an idea. It is a simple idea yet revolutionary in every way, the idea to prepare this country for the…

    Home & Cars Expo 2012

The past whole week I was really excited about going to the exhibition on 5th and 6th at expo center Lahore since the theme read “home expo and super car expo”. I was counting on seeing some innovative home solutions, fancy cars and a lot of appliances for both. As I entered the arena, an ear piercing heavy bike engine race greeted me. Oh wow nice, we have bikes here too… and lots of them, but let’s see if we have the actual products that are expected.

First cars!! Honda Launched its new City Aspire at the event. This attracted a lot of young crowd who wanted to check it…

Football. The most popular sport in the world. That may be hard to believe, we being a die-hard cricket nation, but there are many amongst us who get their blood pumping whenever our favorite team kicks some balls (pun intended).  There’s excitement in the air, and the airwaves for that matter, when Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are about to have a face-off on the field. Manchester United or Chelsea? The answer could incite either jeers or cheers, depending on who you’re surrounded by. It feels like you belong to an exclusive club really, not to mention how convenient it is to…

    Another SHAM ICT Funding Project

There are two main things that are currently causing out growth in ICT to stall. One is the lack of original ideas, so most of the entrepreneurs either copy what is already around internationally or locally (same ideas of online shopping, online bidding) we still have not hit the jackpot with someone creating some thing like instagram or drawsomething and being acquired by one of the big names.

The second issue always lamented by entrepreneurs is lack of any funding sources in Pakistan. Over the years we have seen efforts being made to create funds which would help but what ended happening that most of these funds either did…

    8th Layer of Networking

We all know about the 7 layers of the OSI model. This is the framework by which computer networks are defined. Starting with the physical layer, going through the transport layer and finally culminating in the application layer where end user applications reside. I believe that this should be redefined to include and additional layer – the Social Layer. From the current vantage point, the Social Layer lies right above the Application layer – hence it is served by the Application layer.

The 90s witnessed a boom in what is now referred to as web 1.0. This consisted of static applications hosted over the web. Static applications meant that…

Thiel Fellowship: right idea, wrong approach

I wanted to discuss the Thiel Fellowship and sort of run the idea among our readership to figure out if it was justified or not. Bay Area hedge fund manager Peter Thiel started a Fellowship program in his name about a year ago trying to capitalize not on start ups, but the smart kids who may actually come up with the next billion dollar idea.

Let there be no mistake. Innovation solves problems. Bankers, lawyers and hot shot executives are good for only one thing: managing an existing infrastructure. It is the innovators who turn existing ideas on to their heads and enable breakthroughs. Considering the point above, it…
