Pak Govt’s Citizen Services go Online – is this the first phase of the EGD initative?
This is the new face of Pakistan
The fabled and ambitious initiative of the Electronic Government Directorate to automate all of the Pakistan Government’s services has finally went online.
The new portal of the Pakistan Govt, www.pakistan.gov.pk, will be the new “landing page” for all citizen queries and requests to the Government. They can (or will) get access to online and automated processing systems for common tasks.
From the looks of it, not all services are online yet, but given the total scale of the services provided by all the ministries that is likely to take some time. Here is what you can do online so far:
- Online payment of Gas Bills
- Online services for NIC cards.
- Online NTN Registration and Verification
- Online Sales Tax Registration
- Online filing of numerous taxes
- Get Flight schedules and (better) access to a set of information such as census data.
I like the website layout – its clean, to the point, and is void of any political branding of leadership figures. However, it will take quite a long time yet before all of the hundreds of functions get automated and integrated under one massive data-center like the EGD has been envisioning. Its not just a problem of putting the services up there, but streamlining the hundreds of systems or processes — manual or automated — that are present already in these organizations.
If anyone has used these online services and has any experiences to share, do share them here in your comments.
