Ok maybe not, but how many of you thought $200?
Sometimes small moments highlight plainly the difference of using research in the US and PK, and I thought you might enjoy this (this just happened to me).
Researchers in the US must have spent millions of dollars and years of research to study how the human brain perceives prices.
Their studies must have concluded that the writing $299 instead of $300 is much more likely to result in a “buy” decision because the human brain would overcome the basic price barrier restricting the purchase.
All retailers around the US took that research and implemented this new best practice across all stores.
The consumers were mildly annoyed. Business went very well.
In Pakistan, someone must have thought of implementing a similar structure when pricing something at Rs.49.
What they probably didn’t figure was when I walked in the store and asked the cashier about the price, the cashier would simply say “aik kam pachaas”
There goes the research.
