Aren’t we always grumbling about the lack of accurate statistics about our industry size and expertise? This is especially true when we are travelling and representing the Pakistani IT sector and not just ourselves.

Keeping in view the importance of having accurate and up-to-date data on the industry on an ongoing basis, P@SHA’s Central Executive Committee has decided to initiate Biennial Surveys of Pakistan’s IT & IT Enabled Services Industry – this will be repeated on a regular basis.

Your active participation is required to make this a useful exercise. You can participate in the survey by filling in this questionnaire and sending it the PASHA Secretariat or you can fill in the survey online by clicking on the following URL:

Spare some precious time to participate in this very important industry survey. Come on guys and gals – take 15 minutes to complete this survey and help P@SHA talk knowledgeably about our growth.

Until I saw this link on Guy Kawasaki’s blog, I thought the ability to multi-task was something to brag about. Now I wonder …

Guy read the article on a blog called LifeRemix. Here are some excerpts from the post:

In a project setting, it’s easy to get distracted and try and complete multiple tasks instead of just working on one. This article argues that multi-tasking is not only a bad mindset to have, but it can actually make projects up to 30% late, with only one instance of multi-tasking going on.

When multi-tasking happens, your brain has to mentally go back to the beginning and let your mind catch up to the beginning of the last task you did.

Multi-tasking is the act of stopping a task before it is completed and shifting to something else; in software development the term “thrashing” is often used to describe this practice. When a task is stopped and started there is the immediate effect of a loss of efficiency. Each time a person has to re-start a task, time is required to become re-familiarized with the work and get re-set in where he was in the process. It is very much like the physical set-ups done on a machine in production. Each time you tear down a machine to do another task, you have to set it up to run the part again.

This was earlier written about in detail on another blog – The theory of constraints. I thought it was an interesting perspective. Not sure I agree with it though. I have multi-tasked for years and I find that I get a lot more done than when I just focus on one task. Maybe each of us is different in how we handle tasks. Perhaps it also depends on the kind of work one does and whether the tasks are being handled by a single individual or it is a team effort. Nonetheless this theory made sense and I thought I’d share it with everyone.

The P@SHA Career Expo in Karachi went off quite well on June 16, 2007. We had around 2000 visitors – not the large numbers that the general job fairs attract – but these were all quality people who were relevant for the companies who were exhibiting there. There were 26 company booths – all ICT companies and about half a dozen food and beverage booths.

The interview rooms were very busy because company executives didn’t want to leave off making a decision regarding hiring and preferred to interview the best ones on the spot and hire them there and then.

Some of the workshops were better attended than others. The Successful Interview Techniques workshop led by Jawwad A. Farid and the Alchemy team was a great hit. The mock interviews that were conducted taught the young people quite a lot about how to conduct themselves in a real interview scenario and how to field questions effectively.

The Career Tracks on Telecom, Networking Careers and Finance and Software Engineering went off well too. Some of the speakers were surrounded for long periods afterwards because the questions just kept flowing.

Counselling sessions were once again very well attended. This shows that young people are hungry for advice and have loads of unanswered questions.

The next P@SHA Career Expo event is in Lahore on June 30 at the PC from 9 am to 5 pm. There has been a problem with the Islamabad venue which we are trying to sort out now. A new date will be announced soon.

This is a worthwhile event for our sector. Let us make sure that the other two are just as successful – in fact even more successful.

The event received coverage on the Dawn News Channel, on FM107 Apna Karachi and in Jang and News and some coverage on Geo and FM101.
