UJMi – I think the disappointment is due to the self-inflicted wounds. The other day PTA chairman joined the mobile companies to complain about the increase in telecom GST to 21%. What is the government thinking?
Amazon made it work because a)it had to do it for its own business and b)it had the scale and c)cleverness.
I was thinking that startups in Pakistan can use this for quick ramp up. The service can be anywhere — as long as the connectivity speed and reliability is there.
From a business point of view — its more tricky to do it inside Pakistan. However someone in Dubai or Mumbai could do it and serve the Asian market.
SaaS was meant for businesses. Need CRM? Use salesforce for $100/user/year.
Cloud is for you and me to try out that great idea for which you need servers/storage but don’t want any strings attached.
As the WIRED article says:

I have written for ATP a few times but I don’t agree with every post there. This one was a mistake in my opinion. (Please note that the comment above is from a different Babar).
It is important to keep in mind that Adil Najam does not approve or reject each post – there are other editors who run ATP on a daily basis. And all of them – like us – are professionals with busy jobs. Mistakes in judgement do happen and we should catch them … there is no individual, blog or company which is beyond criticism.
Yeah thats what I thought too. The focus is probably on social web only. I was surprised that they did not include any big shot location based startup.
I think it would be cool to rank the 10 Pakistani startups of 2008!
Anything can be hacked for an ad. I have not found a good reason why Apple left out Pakistan for this year iPhone launch. But hey, 2009 is not that far away.

Great news. I’ve been interacting with TiE in the US for a while. Over there TiE is mainly an Indian group and OPEN is the Pakistani counterpart. From the description of the TiE Lahore chapter, I am glad to see that TiE is working as a group with broad and solid base in Pakistan.
