PC Magazine has decided to quit the printing arena and will cease publishing its flagship magazine.

PC Mag has been in publication for nearly 27 years but it earns 80% of its profits and 70% of revenues from online edition, The New York Times reported.

As part of the re-branding, PCMag and allied publications have been renamed as PCMag Digital Network. The publication was a hit till mid 90’s when its publication was over 1.2 million copies but since then it has declined rapidly with a current figure of 600,000 annual copies.

Online magazines and newspaper editions are certainly making their strong footprint and and the same case applies in Pakistan. Online edition of Jang and Dawn are quite popular and I like the former’s ‘Taaza Tareen‘ section where news are updated after every 5-10 minutes which is a very good feature given the current happenings in Pakistan.

However, advertising revenues for Pakistani online publications are slim but the economic as well as technical aspects of online advertising still have a long way to go. Internet penetration is still low and as compared to the huge outreach of print media, advertisers don’t want to take risks with the cyber publications.
