ENGRO might shelf plans of entering telecom sector

About the author

ENGRO, the premier fertilizer giant of Pakistan, has plans of making an entry into Pakistani telecom sector for a long time but has yet to get any success.

We’ve got confirmed information that the company was all set to buy controlling stake in Telenor’s Pakistan operations even before its launch but the companies failed to reach a deal. Earlier in 2004, the company entered into talks and a possible deal with Vodafone to launch it services in the country but somehow the deal never materialized.

Given these circumstances and the global economic slump, it seems likely that the company has shelved, at least for some time, its plans of entering the telecom sector.

    I hardly think this would constitute as news. This is very old news. Engro’s strength has been management and finances and they are always looking at good projects to invest into. They should not purely be seen as a fertilizer company only.

  2. Qazi Said:

    Faisal, engro has been expanding frontiers in other sectors besides fertilizers and chemicals (their core areas) they are moving into power generation and have a very successful and profitable industrial automation division as well (which i guess was merged with a USA firm as well)

  3. Saad Khan Said:

    @Faisal

    ENGRO had plans of acquiring a stake in any of the cellular companies till very recently. They have just shelved their plans.
