Hi new visitor! At Green & White we discuss startups, business models, new media marketing, usability and more.
You can subscribe to the RSS feed or subscribe for email alerts so that you keep up to date with the latest content. Now, on with the regular content...
We’ve tried this a couple of ways before, but as BumpIn leaves its private beta they were kind enough to help us set it up at Green & White too. Using the chat-widget on the right, you can now talk live with whoever is reading G&W at that time as well. If you’re at greenwhite.org - you can broadcast to leave general feedback or comments like as in a guest book, or talk to any of our editors about stories you want to see. If you’re reading a particular story, you can have a live conversation or leave comments for everyone else who’ll be reading that story too. Do check there often because we’ll be using the chat widget to ask your opinions about developing stories from time-to-time before we publish them too

what’s the big deal simple script :p
You might have used meebo… or made one for yourself. Easy stuff.

you know i hate it when people read tech blogs make comments and dont actually know a shit !! meebo doesnt let you put a chat widget on YOUR website. it only has chat rooms on its OWN website.
October 11th, 2008 at 12:41 am
actually meebo does give a chat thing to put on your page. But with that, only the admin can chat with users that come on the website. plugoo.com does the same. Bumpin is different. it lets people talk to each other and can shout messages to all. in any case its really well done and seems to work very well !!

Spurious go do your research first before commenting.

BumpIn turns each web page into a chat room; meebo, userplane etc. are traditional web chat clients. In other other words, in the service offered by Userplane and BumpIn, they are somewhat similar — but their model is very different. One is designed to enable discussions around content (BumpIn), the other (userplane, meebo) provides a standard web IM, with traditional chatrooms etc.
I, however, really object to the comment made by Corona. “You might have used meebo… or made one for yourself. Easy stuff.” Meebo and userplane are both valuated at around $100 Million each. Such a comment shows complete ignorance of technology on Corona’s part. We should be proud of the fact that a Pakistani startup has entered this very hot space, with an product that appears to have all the ingredients to capture the market. Also checkout the chat browser plugin on bumpin’s site — that’s quite a tech gizmo!

Thank you Usman for details, I will definitely look into it.

I agree with Usman Khan. BumpIn is not just an IM for chatrooms, it’s much more. Especially their Firefox plugin is the coolest and most usable product in this domain so far, though they don’t seem to have attracted enough traffic on it yet. They even have BumpIn live for those who are apprehensive of installing another firefox plugin and want to try it first - check it out at http://site.bumpin.com/browser/index.html
Despite being the best product in this market so far, I don’t know why they have not advertised it properly over the Internet!
October 11th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
As usual, stupid arguments and stupid comments. I don’t even want to talk about what Meebo et al. can or cannot do since I am pretty darn sure that none of you have even tried implementing Meebo Rooms on your website, or for that matter the APIs of any other sites that have been discussed on this thread.
Awww sure, it is a Pakistani company and being Green & White we should hug it but honestly people, get real. Beating the same old dead horse over n over again is not getting us anywhere.
P.S. Best products on the market (read Internet) hardly need to be advertised.

On a more serious note, it is seriously not about the technology. You can build the Large Hadron Collider into your teeny weeny lil web app and no one will bat an eyelid unless you web app does something useful.
A quick show of hands. Who feels that we have time and/or need to talk to random people on the really cool websites we visit?
October 11th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Tim O’Reilly perfectly puts my sentiments in words . He wants us to get serious.

Maxi you just replied (3 times) to “random people on a cool website” — should we count you in also?
October 11th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Why so much hatred towards each other…. cant we seriously be mature enough to make a point without calling the other person an idiot?
October 11th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Seriously folks, cheer up… if we work together, we may have some semblence of making it as a society. Otherwise why not just drop down to cannibalism and be done with it
Its ok for someone to not know the full picture when they’re commenting. Lets learn from each other huh

Osama you are right so let me reply seriously
Maxi here is what i think.
When personal computers first came out. No body really knew why they should have one at their home. It was just so charismatic!! thats all. I remember microsoft’s ad saying their windows 95 has a Digital Clock !!. it turns out that when millions of people had a PC (may be they wanted to have a digital clock or play games, etc :p), internet had a chance to be invented.
the thing is you never know how people can use your product. All you can do is put your idea to reality. People will find a way to use it. The moto is to have fun and let your creativity flow. If you think too much trying to figure out whats serious, you may limit your potential. Maybe this chat widget is a stupid idea but thats one opinion. people may find an excellent use for it. just give them a chance
