MIT Technology Review magazine has published a list of 10 web startups to watch out. Even though I do not agree with their list (for reasons which will take up many posts), it is worth sharing as some of these up and coming startups are interesting. But wait, there’s more. There are is an article on the next bubble in the making and the problem with the business case of social networks. Check the latest issue of Tech Review and share what you found interesting.
The 10 startups are:
- Pinger
- Pownce
- Qik
- Dash
- Ushahidi
- QTech
- 33Across
- Peer39
- Mashery
- Anagran

These are pretty lame startups. But then, the tech review is only ever concerned with the tech used behind the startups rather than the value created.

I agree.. this is a pretty lame list..
can we do a top 10 or top 5 pakistani startups to watch?

Yeah thats what I thought too. The focus is probably on social web only. I was surprised that they did not include any big shot location based startup.
I think it would be cool to rank the 10 Pakistani startups of 2008!

Is GreenWhite support the Pakistani started their company in US or it is just that they should be based in Pak?
Thanks,

Mudassir - naanmap and your other projects are welcome too.
But they need to qualify as proper startup COMPANIES trying to get somewhere as a product / business - I’m sick of receiving coverage requests from people showing off their neat side-project with cool tech to show but without a plan or clue.

The ones founded by Dr. Umar Saif will probably be the top 3 hands down in my list: www.ChOpaal.pk (of which mangoparty.com is a shameless copy), www.BumpIn.com (contextual chat) and www.seeNreport.com (citizen journalism).

chOpaal.pk looks very impressive. Great to see the work Dr. Umar Saif is doing.

I hope we would also make it to the top list.

I’m part of the chOpaal team and am glad to hear that people like our product. The idea is simple: free group sms creating a virtual forum over cellphones.
Oh, and it wasn’t created by graduates with tons of experience. We’re just a bunch of sophomores.

I’ve met both Asim and Dr.Umar Saif (remember I was the little kid with a macbook) and both are amazing people, It’s good to see such a large percentage of Pakistani youth working like this. Keep it Up !
