The thing you need to know is that Free software is Free as in Speech, not necessarily free as in Beer. They *can* charge you but are required to give you the source for it. But what SugarCRM did was just a lousy way of marketing their upgrade. SugarCRM had a love-hate relationship with FOSS and had a strange duel licensing, but this ultimately changed to GNUv2.
