Osama, I believe you are on the right track already. If we can spell out to the government how this is going to impact adversely on IT businesses, I am sure they will realize that the Bill needs to be looked at again and re-drafted.

We need the companies to write to the Ministry and share their concern. Spread the word. Get people talking about it, asking questions, explaining to the government what the Cyber Crime Law should contain. The purpose is not agitation, the purpose is to help them formulate regulation that will assist the government combat cyber crime and yet protect the rights of citizens and businesses.

If we can delay this legilation, perhaps after Eid we could have stakeholders get together in all 3 major cities to discuss this at a Roundtable and send final recommendations to the government.

Thanks for the clarifications on this Jehan. Maybe you could add some information or thoughts on how the rest of the IT companies (especially those in Islamabad) could get involved?

Good to look at it in totally professional scenarios. Actually, it was with this intent that 3 Legal Policy workshop sessions were organized by P@SHA in Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi through June and July. A business delegation also went to visit the Minister of State for IT. A letter was sent by the P@SHA President, Mr. Ashraf Kapadia, to Minister Leghari together with a 67 page report (which Zahid Jamil put together).

The purpose of asking Sabeen to arrange sessions at T2F was to involve non-techies in the process so that they would understand that this Bill will not only affect the IT sector. Hence Zahid explained it in very simple terms.

The DVD is only available in Karachi because T2F organized to have it taped and they are based here. I am sure if someone in Lahore and Islamabad is prepared to make it available, T2F will organize to provide them. Zahid is also speaking with a lawyer in Lahore to run a few sessions for civil society there.

Thanks for taking up this discussion on Green&White.

I certainly like the idea of offshore data storage, though it has its cons too. Also, I would advice government (as if they listen to it) to be extra careful in making any legislation that may harm IT growth potential in Pakistan. I have seen companies suffer under draconian data act in the UK which hasn't served any purpose other than to provide earning opportunities to consultants of all sorts.
