PixSense seems to be coming out of beta now as they start testing their final webpage layout (shown below).
As I had expected, they have taken to the Ooober model and offer pixsense as a solution to carriers as well as social networking websites in a move that is similar to Intercasting Corp’s model for mobile social networks in general.
Also, here is why PixSense was able to justify their $5.4MM investment from ATA Ventures, Innovacom, and Qualcomm.
While Youtube is a huge consumer web video sharing platform, there still is no dominant video sharing platform for mobile networks. With declining ARPUs and increasing churn, video sharing and social networking becomes a lucrative opportunity for mobile carriers to not only lock in existing customers but also attract new ones.
So if one carrier — lets say Mobilink – had its own “closed” video sharing network with a number of great “viral” video channels, it would attract more people (particularly form the 18-24 yr segment) towards them.
Which strategy will win in Pakistan — user-generated video content to drive customer acquisition, or exclusive TV content distribution deals — remains to be seen. For the US, however, user-generated content seems to be a clear win.
