India proposes free 2mbps MetroFi internet to all citizens by 2009
In a rather ambitious project, the Indian Govt is proposing to create large Metro Wifi networks to provide free access to high-speed internet to all.
Complementing that, they plan on building a strong govt-owned national fibre core, aim to setup hosting facilities spread out across the country and will ask all ISPs to connect to the national exchange.
Seems too ambitious, but it clearly shows a central govt focus on creating local content for the local internet.
While Pakistan’s total internet market is just too small to make a difference, an isolated and localized version of the internet within India can have some very interesting effects long-term.
